SAN FRANCISCO -- Facebook has decided to let political campaigns pay online influencers to spread their messages, a practice that had sidestepped many of the social networks rules governing political ads.
Fridays policy reversal highlights difficulties tech companies and regulators have in keeping up with the changing nature of paid political messages.
The change comes days after Democratic presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg exploited a loophole to run humorous messages promoting his campaign on the accounts of popular Instagram personalities followed by millions of younger people.
The Bloomberg posts werent much more than self-deprecating humor used to sell the candidates old guy appeal, using a tactic that until now was largely used to sell skin care products or clothing-subscription services. But the lack of oversight and clear rules around influencer marketing, not to mention their effectiveness in reaching younger audiences, makes them ripe for misuse.
Fridays policy change involves what Facebook calls branded content - sponsored items posted by ordinary users who are typically paid by companies or organizations. Advertisers pay the influential users directly to post about their brand.
Facebook said it is asking the influencer accounts that posted the Bloomberg memes to retroactively use the tool meant for such posts. After this happens, the posts will be labeled as a paid partnership with Bloomberg.

FB and Twitter will find a way to limit only Trump.
I am beginning to wonder if Mini Mike is planning to run as third party like Ross Perot to drain enough votes for the RAT to win.
he is behind the Electoral College Compact to be in place this year. He runs third party gets 1% nationally and because he owns the electors he becomes President.
This election is solely a referendum on Trump. All third party candidates split the anti-Trump vote to Trump's benefit.
Maybe if they dig up Reagan and get him to run, there'd be some defections, but barring that, nobody in Trump's camp is voting third party.
Paid trolls.
“Facebook has decided to let political campaigns pay online influencers to spread their messages,”
Trump has an army of people that do it for free.
And we are happy to do it!
In what universe do you think any Trump voter would switch to vote for Little Mike?
Twitter and Instagram have celebs insert messages against Donald Trump whether knowing or not. You can read someone’s Twitter feed and the subject is about anything else and out of the blue a rant on Trump. I bet many celebs just have some studio person take care of their account.
I don’t. The enemy, however, has different ideas.
Lol, he’d be draining more votes from Democrats than from Republicans.
Yeah, that compact isn’t in effect, it most likely never will be, and even if it were, it wouldn’t change the electoral math one bit for the Democrats.
they have 15 states/174 EV, it will be law in Va shortly so 16 states/187 EV. It has been introduced in FLa, if it passes 17 states/216 EV. If they get to 270 EV elections won’t mean anything anymore.
“they have 15 states/174 EV, it will be law in Va shortly so 16 states/187 EV”
Yes, which means it is not in effect, not even close. Even if they reach the threshold they set, the compact still isn’t valid unless it’s approved by Congress, which isn’t likely to ever happen.
“If they get to 270 EV...”
If they get to 270 EV, then they win the election anyway, without the compact. So the compact changes nothing.
In fact, since the compact would stay in effect no matter which way these states vote, that means that if all those states voted for Dems but Republicans won the popular vote, then all of these Dem states would flip and give their electoral votes to the Republican candidate, handing him an election he would have otherwise lost. That’s really the only circumstance I see where the compact actually changes anything, even though that’s not what the left intended.
At one point or another, every man has to ask themselves, "Where do I draw the line. What does it take for me to dump normal, civil discourse and resort to more...primal methods?" I can honestly say that if the above ever comes to pass it will be one of those cases where the left has gone a bridge to far for me. They will have demonstrably managed to totally circumvent the constitution and literally disenfranchised everyone that disagrees with them. At that point, in my mind, it will be time to hoist the black flag and begin slitting throats.
Sounds reasonable, I’ll let you do the close in work, I’ll provide overwatch.
“I am beginning to wonder if Mini Mike is planning to run as third party like Ross Perot to drain enough votes for the RAT to win.”
the only votes that mini mike would drain would be rat votes, especially if the rat was bernie, as a consequence, there’s no way mini mike will run 3rd party; however, whether he gets the nomination or not, he’ll put billions into the rat PAC accounts ...
“he is behind the Electoral College Compact to be in place this year.”
that won’t take place until enough states join to equal at least 270 electoral votes, and that won’t happen for a very long time, certainly not in 2020 ...
Other than the #nevertrumpers, who already didn’t vote for Trump in 2016, there isn’t anyone on the center right that is voting for Mike.
