Full Title: Churchgoers urged to avoid communion wine and shaking hands if they have 'coughs and sneezes' in coronavirus warning as China death toll rises to 1,380
Daily Mail should come up with shorter titles.

If you’re sick....stay home. Period.

Um...this happens pretty much in every archdiocese during the winter.
I'm not saying coronavirus isn't a cause for concern or being alert, but someone at the Daily Mail doesn't go to church often.

Diocese of Knoxville: Bishop Stika's instructions are that the faithful are not to receive from the chalice, and no"handshake of Peace" --- this is for the month of February, supposedly our peak flu month.
I could go with this all year 'round. We know receiving in either "kind" , we receive the whole living Christ: Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. Glory and praise to Him.
As for the handshake: that just serves as a distraction, esp.at the school Mass, in my experience.

Don’t drink any communist wine either.

Quite frankly, its good being retired since we can avoid all public places until this mess is over with.

I agree!! I love my parish but would rather shake hands OUTSIDE, AFTER Mass! Too much chatting goes along with the handshake break! And don't chat until you get OUTSIDE! There is such a din as soon as the priest leaves the altar. Oh, to be blessed with SILENCE!

Intinction would seem to a reasonable practice, provided that nobody actually sneezes or coughs into the chalice. I’ve never seen anything very convincing that this is a common way for pathogens to spread anyway. Sick people staying home is the most effective protection.

This is part of the reason why I like the TLM: it avoids the sometimes circus of people walking from pew to pew, shaking hands lime it was a political rally. But I've been to NO masses (notably in NYC where Fr George Rutler of EWTN fame) where the sign of peace is skipped entirely - it was wonderful! I could focus on God and not whether or not some stranger thought I was a Bad Person for not shaking their hand.
The key sentence in the article is this one-
Dr Brendan McCarthy, the church's health adviser, did not give any drastic new rules but used the coronavirus outbreak as a serious reminder to be hygienic.
So there it is...the Church of England decides to take the annual influenza-induced reminder to be hygienic at church, and sensationalize the situation.

This really isn’t new. I think we do it every year for a few months.
As I’ve gotten older, I am a little more aware about what I touch now anyway.

Problem is, you can be contagious without having symptoms. Thats what disturbs me about it.

Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

I thought the Church of England didnt have any congregants left and was shutting down. JK. Maybe.
Sounds like regular good common sense during cold & flu season.
