San Francisco car break-ins are so common that the city's district attorney is proposing reimbursing residents whose windows are smashed

San Francisco's district attorney is proposing creating an auto-burglary-assistance fund that would reimburse residents for the cost required to repair shattered windows from break-ins.

The DA, Chesa Boudin, is proposing using $1.5 million from the mayor's office to fill the fund. If it passes, it could be the country's first fund of this kind.

"Auto burglaries are the No. 1 way people in San Francisco are directly impacted by crime," Boudin said in the San Francisco Chronicle. "While we know there's more work to do, this is something we can do today to step up and support victims."

The city has been experiencing an epidemic of car break-ins in recent years. In 2019, 25,677 people reported car break-ins, according to data from the San Francisco Police Department. The police department only makes arrests in about 1% of cases.

Unsuspecting tourists often are victims of such crimes, leaving valuables inside cars and parking on the street, as the Chronicle notes. But the DA's office estimated that nearly 9,000 residents were hit with smashed windows in 2019. This new fund would only be a resource for residents, not tourists or rental car companies, as ABC 7 News reports.

You also get a special note about this when you rent a car at the San Francisco airport.

State law does not allow the police to arrest people for crimes below a certain dollar amount.

If they happen to catch someone, they get a citation with orders to appear. Far as I know there is no penalty for not appearing.

So is anyone surprised that petty (and not so petty) crime is going up?

Liberals are shocked that crime is going up. Can’t figure out why....

This Weather Underground scion ran on a platform of less criminal prosecution. Does he want to prosecute the auto burglars? No, they can go on their merry way burglarizing cars, so let’s use taxpayer funds to repair the damage that the auto burglars do with impunity. When you come down to it, this is a de facto subsidy to the auto burglars.

If they aren’t going to arrest people for crimes, why have laws?

I guess we can go hog wild. find the politicians and unelected bureaucrats you don’t like and go to town.

Hey, prosecuting people for lawbreaking is subjective now. Take them to court for not considering that you believe the lawmyou broke is minor and shouldn’t be prosecuted just like all the other laws they are choosing to ignore.

Now govt idiots are actively creating the Broken Window Theory.

Now the poor of SF will be breaking their own car windows to get the $$ windfall.

The poor aren’t as stupid as Boudin thinks they are.

These assholes do nothing to prevent crime and instead, incentivize crime and then reimburse the victims. Pathetic politicians are incapable of critical thinking and rational thought.

"Auto burglaries are the No. 1 way people in San Francisco are directly impacted by crime."

What a foolish thing to say... Everyone knows the burglaries are being committed in order to support the narcotic industry... Narcotics is the number one cause of crime in mexafornia, and even in the USA...

Why don’t you relax the laws so “Good Citizens” can protect what’s theirs.

I’m for shooting them myself.

2 years ago my brother had his truck stolen and $50K worth of equipment in it as well.

If my brother didn’t already have extra of everything in storage and additional truck available, he could have very well been put out of business right then and there.

That would have made he and his son homeless.

To me, that is as good as murdering man by removing his ability to earn and care for his family.

Absolutely… Just look at how much more narcotics the democrats can sell when an effort is made to ensure the customer has the money to spend... :)

18 month ago we were with a buddy and his family going to do the Tea Garden and the De Young Art Museum which are next door to each other on Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive in Golden Gate Park. This was a busy Saturday with hundreds of people walking to and from the various top flight places to visit.

Right in front of the Tea Garden entrance, five minutes before our walking up, a new Mini Cooper parked on the street had its rear window smashed out and coats and other items in the car scooped up by two young residents of the city and they walked away. There was no public concern, no police and it was like it was an hourly occurrence.

That’s the end of civilization when that begins to happen.

It’s hard to picture the homelessness problem and the 3rd world issues with feces and urine and stuff.

Just awful
