PHOENIX An organization of moms against gun violence is applauding a recent decision by the Phoenix Union High School Board.
The board voted unanimously last week to require the parent or guardian of the districts 27,000 students to read and sign a gun storage safety form.
"This is just an obvious thing we can do to prevent future tragedies, said board member Lela Alston.
The "Secure Storage Notification Resolution" requires that gun storage and safety information be included in the student handbook of all 27,000 students of the district's 20 high schools.
The resolution was prompted by the groups Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action For Gun Sense in America. It highlights how unlocked guns play a prominent role in unintentional shootings involving children, gun suicides and campus shootings.
Phoenix Union Board President Stephanie Parra said the resolution is a small but meaningful step to educate parents.
From time to time, guns have made an appearance on campuses," said board president Stephanie Parra. When we speak to moms, often it's because the parent did not properly store their firearm at home.

I would tell the Phoenix Union Schools to go F themselves. Mom demand Action should pound sand IMHO...
Why in the world would anyone let a government school do anything with firearms? Take your kids to NRA classes without the school's knowledge. It's none of their business.
I have no problem with this. Of course my guns are stored safely. Their idea of safe storage is probably a bit different than mine though.
so,uh, exactly what happens if a parent refuses to sign it?
A safe storage place for a gun is on your person ...
I cant read this signature, it looks like Gofvckyourself?
Nope. FOAD would be my reply and it would be delivered in person.
The school sends a LOT of paper home, on a lot of subjects, and requires parents to sign. I remember pages about bullying, including use of social media, about homework, about proper school attire, about attendance, about vaccinations, about staying home if you have a fever.
There were also opt-outs for sex education, some paperwork about the HPV vaccination for a couple of years, and a couple others.
I just have a routine hernia operation. I had to sign three separate forms which were of this exact type, informing me of risks and requiring my signature to indicate I had received them.
A lot of papers parents are required to sign, it is because the schools don’t trust the kids to deliver the papers to the parents. So this way, the kid at least has to forge a signature and return it.
Frankly, it just seems like most people here thought the parents were being forced to sign something saying they had taken the precautions listed, rather than just that they had been given the form listing precautions.
That would be a different kind of form. The signature on this form says “Yes, I was handed this form by my child”.
It doesn’t provide any information to the school; a signature does not indicate you have taken any action, or that you agree with the information you have been given. This is an “information” form, and parents get lots of these to sign.
Some schools make parents sign kids assignment forms, so the school knows the parents are aware of the homework the kid is expected to do.
See post 90. The form does not ask if you have guns, or require that you do anything about any guns you have. Your signature indicates only that you have received the form, and understand the safety guidelines.
I think they added a page to the handbook about proper storage of guns around children. And while i have not seen the page in the handbook, so I don’t know if the information given is correct, I believe the parent signs a form that says they received a copy of the student handbook.
Well since I didn’t receive a copy I can’t sign it. Oh, And my youngest kid is 45 and none of us live in AZ either. So there’s that. Sure did stir up a lot of comments though didn’t it. :-) Seems like you and Magnum44 caught some flack. But, you’re tuff.
What is flack, but the cleansing rain washing away the tears of the ignorant?
:)
Because it is not about safe gun handling, it is about whether you have one or not.
