The Trump administration seeks to end the popular Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, which allows government workers, Native American tribal employees and nonprofit workers to earn forgiveness of their student debt.
The White House's budget proposal for fiscal year 2021, which was released on Monday, would completely eliminate the program, which the administration estimated would save a little more than $1.9 billion over the course of the year.
PSLF applicants are eligible for forgiveness of their student loans after making 120 qualifying monthly payments and working for a set period of time as a full-time employee of the government, a nonprofit, or a tribal organization. The program is also open to AmeriCorps and Peace Corps volunteers.
Loans covered under the PSLF do not qualify if they are from private lenders, among other restrictions.

Government workers are already getting tax money. They are less worthy, not more worthy, of "loan forgiveness" than people working in the private sector.
I don’t think this is a good program. However, if it was in effect and was a contract with anyone, I don’t think the government should stop a program with contractual agreements.
To be clear, I do not like any of these programs but I don’t think the government should kill laws retroactively.
Redline all of AmeriCorps. And as much other taxpayer funding of the left as can be identified. Make big Lib pay for its own fan boys. It obviously can afford them.
Ok, but the change could at least be applied to people graduating from college this year and afterwards.
The Public Service thing was aimed at getting doctors and nurses to areas of the country where they were scarce and needed. But it bloomed into a spend a year signing up democrat voters or showing graffiti "artists" how to use more environmentally friendly paint and presto your student loans were forgiven.
I'd have to think about that for a while and learn more about the program and what majors apply.
I think schools need math and science teachers. If so, maybe that would be good. Do we want to pay for gender studies and film majors, I don't think so.
I would think it would just have a starting point. My daughter is a teacher in California, so she’s counting on the ten year mark, but by the time she makes her payments for ten years, she says there wont be much left to forgive.
I would like to see this, as well as allow student debt to be included in bankruptcies. Our “higher learning” institutions are nothing but Communist anti-American brain washing camps for the mentally unstable.
This is an election year and so all things have to be considered in that light.
This probably does not effect many of Trumps voters, but the student loan issue is not going away and this is just the beginning of the fake news beat down the MSM is preparing if Trump handles it poorly.
It doesn’t have anything to do with academic discipline. It’s all about where you work... government positions, Americorps, et al.
So you can major in gender studies and later work for the government and get rid of your student loans????
No way I support that. We have enough liberals in our governments.
Great idea, but there shouldn’t be a word about it until after the election.
Americorps has the same mission as the Peace Corps. It turns it’s participants into lifelong Democrats. The Peace Corp should be eliminated on the anniversary of Chapaquiddik.
This is not debt forgiveness. It’s debt transferred to you and me and our fellow taxpaying citizens. The money has been spent. And most of it came from me and you in the first place.
See post #15. If President Trump presents this the right way, he can make this a huge campaign issue.
The government should not be involved with student loans in any way at all.
The mere involvement of government distorts the system.
That is precisely what happened to the medical care industry.
Once Medicare ramped up and government money started flowing doctor and hospital fees skyrocketed.
You borrow money, you pay it back. Simple.
That’s a good point and very true. But we might want to consider getting as many votes as possible.
Government workers...
We gave at the office already
