The death toll from the new coronavirus surpassed 1,000 on Monday as governments around the world work to contain the outbreak.
Officials announced Monday that 1,016 people in mainland China have died from the coronavirus and that 42,638 people had contracted the infection, The New York Times reported. The statistics indicate a rapid surge in the number of confirmed cases and deaths stemming from it.
China's National Health Commission reported on Sunday 40,171 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 908 deaths. The Hubei province, the epicenter of the virus, announced 103 deaths in the past day from the deadly disease, accounting for a majority of the newly reported deaths.

The United Kingdom on Monday announced that the virus posed a "serious and imminent threat to public health" and imposed measure to quarantine those infected with it. The declaration was made after the country reported eight confirmed cases of the coronavirus.

I’m guessiing the number is 20 times that!
And how many have died outside of China?
Proof of how bad free government run health care is.
Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
I spoke with my lead manager tonight for China. He’s actually in Taipei, and is not sure he wants to go back to Shanghai yet. IF he goes back, he must stay in his home for 14 days, to clear quarantine.
He expressed to me that people in China are “scared”. They don’t believe ANY official reports on numbers of infected, or dead. He said to me, “Official actions do not match the data being reported”. For anyone from China to say such a thing, even when out of the country, is almost unthinkable. They must REALLY be worried.
No one from our office has been allowed to come to work for more than 2 weeks now. And, no one has a time table for when they will come back.
Without accurate data from China (does it affect young and old differently? What is the mortality rate?) we can’t
come to any conclusions about it.
Those willing, that are scared there, we ask they see Him of Romans Chapter 1.
That is the official Chicom line.
We have no idea if it is true. Another article posted yesterday claimed the virus was very good at math, because the death toll was always 2.1%, exactly. That being said this 2.1% number is clearly wrong, as they are using total infected as the denominator. There was a post with link yesterday that showed exactly that. It was bizarre. No matter the current infected, the death rate for that day was adjusted so it came to exactly 2.1%. How anyone can think the Chinese official numbers are correct is beyond me.
Translation of your link, Google translate.
Amazing virus, still a master of mathematics
January 30: 170 deaths / confirmed 7821 = 2.1%,
January 31: 213 deaths / confirmed 9800 = 2.1%,
February 1: 259 deaths / diagnosed 11880 = 2.1%,
February 2: 304 deaths / confirmed 14401 = 2.1%,
February 3: 361 deaths / confirmed 17238 = 2.1%,
February 4: 429 deaths / confirmed 20471 = 2.1%,
February 5: 493 deaths / confirmed 24441 = 2.1%
February 6: 564 deaths / confirmed 28605 = 2.1%
The infected aren't done with the race until the are either recovered or dead, these calculations assume no one merely infected will die.
Just for fun, do your own calculations using the ChiCom numbers, but take the total number of people who are no longer sick (well OK some of those are no longer sick because they are dead) as the denominator. dead/(dead+recovered) multiply by 100 for the percentage of clinically sick cases who die.
These are the fudged numbers the ChiComs are using to downplay the fatality rate!
they get in even more trouble when they try to do that...
Also wouldnt include milder cases or unregistered case where they havent been tested
1000 dead is a rounding error in a country of 1.5B people. Sounds like they are having the same suspicions we are about the batshit crazy reaction by the government.
564 deaths / confirmed 28605 = 2.1%
My calculator sez 1.97%
It is highly likely that the epidemic has reached Beijing, which changes all the rules.
It is many times higher, as everyone here knows.
30,000 ? It’s been going on in China since December.
Might be more than 30k.
We’ll see how welding apartment building doors shut works in the Capital District.
There’s 7.7 Billion people on earth. A thousand doesn’t seem like a lot if you think about it.
“Im guessiing the number is 20 times that!”
Why do you keep spreading such BS PROPAGANDA? Do you hate Chinese people, or something? Anyone with half a brain knows the number is 50 to 100 times the amount advertised, not 20 times - dingbat.
I’m betting it’s 250,000+ dead, 10-15 million-plus infected, and spreading rapidly.
