Defense Department expected to announce billions more will go to border wall
WREG ^ | FEBRUARY 10, 2020 | CNN WIRE

The Defense Department, under White House pressure, is expected to announce this week that billions more in Pentagon funds will go toward the border wall, according to an administration official.

A senior Defense official also told CNN that a major announcement about the border will made this week...

Last year, President Trump declared a national emergency, allowing him to unlock billions of dollars in federal funds to mount additional barriers along the US-Mexico border. While efforts to pull from several government accounts has been met with legal challenges, the administration has pressed forward.

In January, the Pentagon received a request from the Department of Homeland Security to build and pay for hundreds of additional miles on the southwest border.

The request is for roughly 270 miles of border barrier and other infrastructure to be built in areas that are considered drug corridors, a mix of rural and urban areas, a senior Department of Defense official told CNN at the time.

Because the request is to ostensibly help combat drug smuggling, the Pentagon will be allowed to construct those barriers under its pre-existing “284” counter drug authority, which allows the Defense Department to build barriers, lighting and roads for the purpose of countering drug trafficking, according to the official.

With this money, the Military construction funds from last year (that were just released from holdup by the Courts), and this year's new appropriation, a total of about $12 billion will be available for contracting this year.

That is about twice as much, as has been contracted for border wall, during the whole Trump Administration so far.

It is going to be gloriuos!

In the early days of the Republic almost all military spending was in defense of our borders.
Coastal defenses and frontier forts.

It’s amazing that so many of our modern representatives refuse to defend our borders today.

Every single mile needs wall. There is no such thing as “impassable” to smugglers and drug cartels.

But don’t worry, the neocons never get tired of sending our soldiers to defend other countries half way around the world. Defending freedom or something.

I totally agree. The idiots arguing against a border wall would have us believe that healthy Mexicans cannot blaze a trail through mountains.

I think a new type of landline that uses pepper spray and indelible blue dye should be invented and deployed.

Trump and the Border Patrol are building exactly what is needed, thanks.

“Every single mile needs wall. There is no such thing as “impassable” to smugglers and drug cartels.”

Similarly, no wall is impassable.

Good barriers can deter or defeat most, but they can only delay determined and well resourced infiltrators. With ladders and ropes, people climb Mount Everest.

The Border Patrol uses “Border Calculus” to design what is needed to control each segment of the border:

Time to Intercept = Disappearing (Get Away) Time - Detection time.

In a city, fence jumpers can disappear in a minute or two. In very rural areas, they can be tracked for days, before they can get to a road.

Every mile of the border is planned for detection technology. If tracking and intercept capability there is good, the few minutes of delay to set up a ladder and drop a rope, isn’t worth millions or billions of dollars, that could be more effective elsewhere - such as for better interdiction capability (access roads, remote basing of Border Patrol Officers, aerial assets, etc.)

That we even have to consider building a physical barrier to reduce the number of Mex/SA invaders* and their drugs coming into the USA is all the proof I need that we are actually in an economic/territorial war with Mexico.

Trade treaties are farce so long as Mexico does not put a stop to the invasion.

Recent headline was all about how many Billions are sent to Mexico by “Undocumented immigrants*” each year.
Those are funds removed from the U.S. economy by the invaders*.
Until the Mexican Gov. feels more pain from allowing (Encouraging) the invasion than benifit from trade treaties the situation will never change.

So build the wall, then deport them all!
Let’s win this war.

.

Where there are shear cliffs, there is no need to build a fence. Down stream, maybe, but not where there are cliffs. Also, the are vast dessert lands that nobody would dare attempt to cross.

Everywhere else, yes, put the wall.

And you man & patrol!

Hadrian’s Wall & The Great Wall failed not because they were bad ideas but because various imperial governments refused to man & patrol!

Works for the Swiss. Mountains, that is. Plus home-based military-type firearms, government-issued ammo, and mrksmanship contests.

No sarcasm whatsoever.

No offense taken. That being said, the mountains on the US-Mexico border are not the Alps. They don’t go up to 14,000 feet in a continuous chain and they’re not as iced over and cold as hell. There is no comparison.
