Here precocious Pete, in praising Bernie, reveals his own duplicity while inadvertently making an excellent point.
The average American does indeed confuse socialism with communism, albeit not willfully but rather due to ignorance. Many folks think the terms are either interchangeable, or opposing, depending on context, but are fuzzy on distinctions.
Communists, OTOH, *willfully* exploit the ignorance of their targeted dupes, by continually acquiescing — when it suits them— to the false assumption that socialism and communism are entirely distinct, having no relationship to one another. Thus they (communists) can repeatedly claim nonsense such as, “I’m a socialist, not a communist.”
This is a bald-faced lie. Inside every “socialist” is a communist planning to come out of the closet when the time is right.
In fact, socialism is an ECONOMIC system. It’s how (top-down) money & the flow of money are arranged, and who (the government) owns & controls property and the MEANS OF PRODUCTION.
Communism is a top-down form of GOVERNMENT. It’s the political arrangement of the PEOPLE (politicians, committees, bureaucrats) who CONTROL the socialist economy.
Socialism is the first necessary stage of Communism. IOW, it’s first necessary for the Communists to gain control of the economy (means of production, financial mechanisms, private property & wealth) in order to seize control of the government & establish a top-down dictatorship “in the name of the proletariat” wherein the proletariat in fact must do what they’re told, or be shot as “enemies of the people.”
Thus any “socialist” who claims s/he isn’t a communist is lying. Period.
