I had never heard of Delaware being without one of its two senators in 1971 and 1972. Teddy Kennedy was born in 1932 so he couldn't take his brother's Senate seat when JFK was elected President, so the Kennedys arranged for a family friend to hold the seat for two years until Teddy was old enough.
In 1968 the Peace and Freedom Party candidate for President was under 35 years old. In California they refused to put his name on the ballot so only the Vice Presidential candidate was listed. I don't think it would have affected the outcome...Nixon carried California by more than 200,000 votes (only a plurality because of the votes for George Wallace...P&F ticket got less than 30,000).
