They grieve more so when the loss is unexpected than when they know the end is near and they had the opportunities to express their love for that person. Will grief still be present? Yes, but the intensity will be lessened, or moderated, by the fact that they had time for foreclosure, so to speak.

Sometimes death is even welcomed when a loved one passes. Both my parents died suddenly. I found solace that they passed that way, and not a slow lingering death full of pain. My grief was not being able to tell them both that I loved them, one last time.
