A Thai soldier has gone on a gun rampage inside a shopping mall, killing at least 20 people and taking a dozen hostages while live-streaming the mass murder on Facebook and posing for selfies.

Sergeant Major Jakrapanth Thomma, 32, began his murderous rampage this afternoon at his barracks, where he executed his commanding officer along with two other soldiers, before commandeering a humvee and tearing away from the scene.

As he drove along the motorway toward the Terminal 21 shopping mall in Nakhon Ratchasima, also known as Korat, a city 155 miles northeast of Bangkok, Thomma opened fire on civilians along the road.

The soldier targeted several places, including a house, a Buddhist temple and an army base during his murderous rampage, before heading to the mall where he is believed to have holed up with terrified hostages.

It's good when only the government can have guns, dontcha know. /s.

Also, this livestreaming of murders is becoming a thing. Ever notice that no one goes after social media, they'd rather blame the gun instead.

The idiot media is calling him a “Sgt. Major” but the Royal Thai Army doesn’t have Sgt. Major ranks.

Some asian news services are referring to him as a Corporal.

Ban guns in the hands of soldiers - that’s the ticket!

That was my immediate thought. But if he has been absorbed into that Borg, it didn't show in his name as given by the press.

He is a native Thai. Its unimaginable though in a Buddhist country.

It’s a puzzler. He could be a natural psycho; or he could be a converted religious psycho whose new Islamic name hasn’t been formally disclosed. Can’t tell without more information.

But as you say, Buddhists don’t act like this.

Because nobody in Southeast Asia has ever run amok before.

The expression ‘run amok’ is now synonymous with ‘go crazy’, but originally had a specific meaning. The term originated in Southeast Asia, where ‘amok’ (variously spelled amuk, amuck, amuco) meant ‘a murderous frenzy or rage’.

I thought “amok” was associated with the Moros in the Philippines, particularly in the US action there in the early 20th century. The frenzy the Moros were in was so intense that the US forces looked for a bullet with adequate one-shot stopping power... the .45.
