President Trump State of the Union – Second Amendment is Under Siege

In the State of the Union speech on Tuesday night, President Trump vowed to protect Second Amendment rights.

President Trump gave an epic State of The Union (SOTU) speech on 4 February 2020. He touched on numerous themes, highlighted multiple successes of the Trump Administration, and recognized numerous exceptional individuals. President Trump honored radio talk show icon Rush Limbaugh with the highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The speech started near 9 p.m. Eastern time. About 69 minutes into the speech, President Trump spoke of freedom of religion, and his administration's commitment to protecting First Amendment rights.

Then he addressed the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights. From the SOTU, 2020:

“Just as we believe in the First Amendment, we believe in another Constitutional right that is under siege all across our country.

So long as I am president, I will always protect your Second Amendment Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Presidents' words during SOTU speeches are always analyzed in multiple ways. They are primarily political speeches, for political purposes. The content shows, at a minimum, what the President believes is worth emphasizing for political purposes.

There has never been as clear a divide between the two main political parties, on support for the Second Amendment, as exists today.

Democrats, if they believe the Constitution has any meaningful constraints on government, have variously stated the Second Amendment is outdated, only applies to militia members (approved of by the federal government), does not apply to most firearms, does not apply outside the home (except possibly for regulated hunting), and can be restricted to any extent, as long as the word “safety” is applied.

President Trump, and what is becoming the Trumpian Republican party, took care to place the Second Amendment on the same level as the First Amendment in the SOTU.

Conservatives need to take back the House. We will not get legislation restoring Second Amendment rights unless we hold the House, the Senate, and the Presidency.

Even then, we will need to hold the politicians' feet to the fire to restore our rights.

Our rights don’t come from legislation, or the government.

Any legislation is to put —limits— on government.

Hey Chief. When the border wall constructors are done, have them build one around D.C.

535+++ vs. 330 million

How did all totalitarians throughout history do that?

Dontcha love how “representatives” sided with the citizens and asked for Beto “hell yeah...” O Maos resignation?

Our rights don’t come from legislation, or the government.

Any legislation is to put —limits— on government.

So? Non sequitur.

Legislation has been used to infringe on our rights for decades.

It will take legislation to remove the infringements and restore our rights to their properly protected place.

Is this the same President Trump who banned bumpstocks and has endorsed red flag laws? Same Trump? Ok.

Don't fool yourself, Dean. Democrats are gun grabbers to be sure, Republicans will lie about Second Amendment rights until they get elected.

More elected conservatives protecting our rights is better than having to physically fight for them.

Fair enough. Let’s pass legislation restricting government limits and infringement on the 2nd A.

And your point is?

Infringements on Second Amendment rights will not be removed by Democrats.

If Republicans regain control of the House, with pressure, there is a good chance of some reform.

If President Trump is re-elected, there is a good chance of replacing Ruth Bader Ginsburg with a constitutionalist and textualist on the Supreme Court.

It will *not* happen if President Trump is not re-elected or if the Republicans lose the Senate Majority.

I'm not voting FOR Trump, I'm voting AGAINST whomever the Dems put up against him. Trump and the Republicans in Congress spend just as much as the Dems so there's no difference between them in that regard.

The two parties do differ on the second amendment, but let's hold off on lionizing Trump simply because he hit a talking point during his SotU speech. He has proven that he is willing to react to hysteria and infringe on the 2A. But yes, we need to keep the Senate and take the House.

"You did not read the whole article, did you?"

Please see my tagline.

Haha. Seriously though, the article lends all of four words to the bumpstock issue. We are on the same page when it comes to Trump and the 2A, but I think too many people paint a rosy picture of Republicans and guns. They are politicians and will do whatever it takes to get money and votes. That's all that matters to them.

When RBG leaves the SCOTUS & is replaced by a CONSTITUTIONALIST, the Second Amendment will be protected & perhaps even restored to its original meaning for a long time.

THEN we 2nd Amendment folks can work on getting the NFA repealed forever, as well as abolishing all of the ANTI-Constitutional BATFE regulations dismissed forever..
