How Trump Wins Again. Are Democrats going to give this election away?
New York Times ^ | February 6, 2020 | David Brooks

Posted on 02/07/2020 11:11:07 AM PST by karpov

As several people have noticed, this was the most politically successful week of the Trump presidency.

First, President Trump’s job approval numbers are rising. When the impeachment inquiry got rolling in October his Gallup approval rating was 39. Now it’s 49. If he can hold this level, he’ll probably be re-elected.

Second, impeachment never became a topic of conversation among rank-and-file Democrats, let alone independents and Republicans, so it was easily defeated in the Senate.

To the extent that it was noticed, impeachment worked for Republicans and against Democrats. Approval of the Republican Party is now at 51 percent, its highest since 2005. More Americans now identify as Republicans than as Democrats. As Gallup dryly observed in announcing these numbers, “Gallup observed similar public opinion shifts when Bill Clinton was impeached.”

Third, there is no Democratic transcender. The Iowa results, though far from final, indicate that there is no obvious candidate who can be quickly embraced by all factions of the party. With Mike Bloomberg now doubling his campaign spending, it looks like the Democratic primary battle is going to go on for a while.

Democrats may wind up in a position in which they can’t nominate Bernie Sanders because he’s too far left, and they can’t not nominate him because his followers would bolt from a Biden/Bloomberg/Buttigieg-led party.

Only 53 percent of Sanders voters say they will certainly support whoever is the Democratic nominee.

...

Trump’s speech reframes the election around this core question: Is capitalism basically working or is it basically broken?

Trump can run on the proposition that it’s basically working. He has a lot of evidence on his side: The unemployment rate is the lowest in decades. Wages are rising. The typical family income is higher than it has ever been.

Brooks must have been weeping as he typed these words. He tried with all his might to defeat Trump and it didn’t happen. All the elitist pundits are wrong about Trump.

Democrats are secret agents working against themselves to insure a Trump victory!

David Brooks is deeply concerned that the Democrats have no candidate to defeat the Republican.

He’s supposed to be the Times token Republican.

“Democrats sure seem like they want Trump to win.”

I’m sure there are a lot of them that do want Trump to win. If Sanders or Warren are nominated, it will be a big hit to the party, but it could survive, provided neither of them beat Trump. If they were to manage to cheat enough to get Sanders or Warren elected, the country would be screwed, and the Democrat party would cease to exist.

If Buttman, Biden or Bloomberg win, (the killer B’s?), it would be business as usual. That would take some serious cheating to get any one of those three over the line.

i don’t think they are going to give it away.

First, Trump is fighting hard. He’s doing the right things for the country. He’s doing the right things to get re-elected. And given how hard Trump is fighting, no one can say it was given to him. He fought for it.

Second, the Democrats are fighting hard too. But they are doing the wrong things, based on the wrong values. And they are making moves made of desperation instead of what’s right for the country. And it’s backfiring on them. So again, I don’t think you can say the Democrats are giving him the election, because they are fighting. But they are shooting themselves big time.

We weren’t supposed to be able to elect anyone who would secure the border and enforce the law.

The GOP had us in box endlessly voting for amnesty candidate after amnesty candidate.

President Trump has upended the largest bipartisan project of the last 30 years, the fundamental transformation of the USA into North Mexico.

I don’t think it will take cheating to get Biden to win. How can Sanders win, when he is extremely unpopular with black voters and Hispanic voters. He is not great with elderly or working class white voters. And ones of his core groups, young voters, don’t turn out very well to vote. Sanders would need cheating to win.

When you know your side is going to lose, and you have a future to look to, you find someone else to take the fall.
When you know your last chance is before you, you might choose to go down fighting a worthy & clearly superior opponent.
When you know nothing of what you really face, you take on giants with aplomb.

Hence...
- Methinks most of the candidates are bailing gracefully (a la “not my fault”).
- Bernie is reaching for the biggest stage he’ll ever have, invariably to retire or expire thereafter.
- Buttguyguy thinks this will work out for him no matter what, not understanding the lesson of Mondale.

Maybe they have given up and are trying to figure out who to run next time

To that end...let Sanders run. It will keep the WOKE crowd happy. He will lose.

Then let their next rising star run.

their main concern is keeping the House. Our main concern is getting them evicted.

“I don’t think it will take cheating to get Biden to win.”

I disagree. Biden is a wreck. In a one to one campaign against Trump, Biden would be on display showing his obvious mental deficiency.

The Trump economy coupled with a candidate that can’t remember where he is? The people won’t buy that.

I’m not saying Biden is great. But Sanders is a nonstarter. Dems need black voter turnout. Sanders does not have enough of a constituency. His young voters won’t turnout that strong, and blacks, Hispanics, etc. will stay home at a higer rate.

No, if Bernie gets Cheated again the extreme left runs it’s own candidate and the Democrats come in third in the general.

That was clear in 2016, and the DNC is finally beginning to face that reality.

The only hope that the corporate giants have to retain control in the medium and long term is to nominate Bernie and ensure the biggest drubbing in American history for his ideology.

If they do that, they will lose the House of Representatives though.

Trump is a cash-cow for the DNC. Unfortunately, DJT is their greatest asset.
