The Pentagon is bolstering the number of warships the Navy will seek in its fiscal 2021 budget request after the White House complained an initial proposal was too low to meet President Donald Trump’s long-term target, according to officials.
In the budget proposal expected Monday, the Navy will request funding for eight ships, up from seven in a draft service request in mid-December. The new request for the fiscal year starting Oct. 1 includes two DDG-51 Arleigh Burke destroyers built by General Dynamics Corp., one more than the service proposed seeking in the December draft.

I really think we need a large number of non-nuclear submarines. Nuclear subs are colossally expensive and they can only be one place at a time. I read you can have several battery powered subs for the cost of one nuclear sub. Yes, they are less powerful, but more of them. As Stalin said, “Quantity is a quality all its own.”
Actually, it looks like they lacked the funding to build a Virginia Class Sub after Congress raided the budget to increase funding our Nuclear Weapons security and maintenance. They still had enough for a DDG. I would have been fine spending that money on border security, but a new DDG is good too.
Cut funding to planned parenthood and some other Dem crap and build both. More is better.
We don’t have the manning - but unmanned subs are probably just around the corner - you could stay underwater without oxygen for a long period of time

The Navy desperately needs a “half Arleigh Burke” Frigate.
4,000 ton class. 12nm range. Aegis. 48-60 VLS tubes and a 5in gun.
Yeah, add in CIWS, SUBROC and SRAM.
For half the $3.5bil cost of a Burke. Or less.
And we need 50 of them.
Just like we need about 25 AIP conventional subs.
And we need them all quickly. Or we’ll find we have the 2nd biggest Navy and we’ll be at risk in the Pacific theater.

Solid cell nuclear batteries, (charging systems) similar to what satellites use. There are chemical reaction recharging systems that are airless and silent. Then there is old fashioned diesel engines.
Swedish diesel subs have apparently been VERY successful in war games against the US Navy.
The funding shift likely won’t sit well with Armed Services Democrats Jack Reed of Rhode Island, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Tim Kaine of Virginia. The Virginia-class submarine is made jointly in Connecticut and Virginia by General Dynamics and Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc.
The Destroyers are also jointly made by General Dynamics and Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc. They build them in Maine and Mississippi.
The reason we don’t have diesel boats is range, speed and detectability. Diesel boats are relatively short legged, must come up regularly to snorkel and are strategically easier to track. They’re useful in defense of a single point or limited area these days, but a nuclear boat is overall a better choice.
If we sent a diesel boat to Japan, everyone in orbit would know where it was going.
I forgot to note that Maine is home to Senator Susan Collins and Mississippi has Roger Wicker (R) and Cindy Hyde-Smith (R).

Ummm, that’s what the Navy is hastily doing with the FFGX program, dude. They’re desperately looking for an off-the-shelf frigate design to mass produce now that the LCS has turned out to be a big floating box (in two designs) of fail at being a frigate. They are biasing it more towards air defense, though.
