Why can’t they say it “hit” the wall? “Impacted” is best restricted to molars.

What an amazing thing that an airplane can break in three pieces and there’s only one death.

Wow.

The plane is built very well.
Avoid the software, however.

Landed “hot and fast”, about 6,000 past the runway threshold and only 3,000 feet from the end of the runway. Basically, he missed the runway. Major screw-up by the pilot.

overran runway, impacted wall, broke up...

Wasn't there a STOP sign at the end of the runway?

I wonder what the conditions were and if mechanical failure is suspected. If the anti-lock brakes failed or the thrust reversers failed, that might account for it.

The report should read from Smyrna to Constantinople.

Okay, I see that the aircraft overshot the landing threshold by over a mile and had only 3300 feet to stop. Pilot should have gone around.

Did the pilot scream “Allahu Akbar!” before touchdown?

I read once that Turkish Airlines had a terrible safety record but maybe it had gotten better in recent years. They had a commercial during the Super Bowl.

In 1974 a Turkish DC-10 crashed near Paris, killing 346.
In 1976 a Turkish Boeing 727 crashed in southern Turkey, killing 154.
In 2003 a Turkish Airlines plane crashed during approach to the airport in Diyarbakir, Turkey, killing 75.

Wind was reported 290 at 22 knots, gusting to 37 knots, wind variable 240 to 330. Why did the aircraft land on runway 06?
