Sen. Collins will vote to acquit Trump on both impeachment articles
Portland Press Herald ^ | 2/4/2020 | Rachel Ohm

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, seen as a possible swing vote in President Trump’s impeachment trial, announced on the Senate floor Tuesday that she will not vote to remove the president.

“This decision is not about whether you like or dislike this president or agree with or oppose his policies or approve or disapprove of his conduct in other circumstances,” Collins said. “Rather, it is about whether the charges meet the very high constitutional standard of treason, bribery or other high crimes or misdemeanors.”

Sorry but ...

She said it was “improper and demonstrated very poor judgement” for Trump to discuss an investigation into the activity of former Vice President Joe Biden and his son with the Ukrainian president...

... is not what I look for in an honest republican senator!

Trump did exactly what a President should do!

No tax payer money should be going into any politicians pockets and that includes anyone running for office!

There was nothing Improper or in poor judgement about what President Trump said or did!

Yeah my guess he’s going to vote to convict because he knows voting to acquit probably won’t be enough to get him re-elected.

Oh sorry, my memory not what it use to be. Yes right I can see the picture in my head now...

...Mittens, is a sure impeach vote, his hatred for Trump being the only thing that matters to his petty mind.

As for Mittens, it’s all a question of whether his “petty mind,” as you state, overwhelms his instinct for political survival.

At this point, I could see things going either way. Not that I would give him much credit for an acquittal vote.

Actually, the only winners of my “grudging respect” award would be any defecting RATs, of whom for now I predict zero. I hope I’m wrong.

But as I posted on another thread this afternoon, we no longer have Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill. We have the Sane Party and the Lunatic Party.

And that explains why the Sane Party often comes off looking spineless.

How did you react the last time you were verbally abused by an obviously deranged person? More than likely, you kept quiet and just tried to disengage from the situation.

Well, what works in everyday life doesn’t necessarily work in politics. Until Trump, the Pubbies have allowed their essential sanity to prevail when the proper response would have been “stand and fight like a lunatic.”

Secret vote? Never. How are we to choose those who best reflect our values if we don’t know how they vote.

It’s good what she is doing ... but based on her long history, this is more a political calculation than a strong defense of the Constitution. I hope I’m dead wrong, though!

No apology from me. She voted for witnesses. So she, like all ahole Rinos, play it both ways.

She has no political choice. Trump is getting active already IN THE PRIMARIES! That’s not Swamp protocol.

Primary her.

I find this repellent. She is posing as if this is some courageous stance.

Shameful.

I agree. Senator Collins’ speech was an astute analysis of the House Impeachment

Trump will get all 53 GOP votes. That’s all he needs to be acquitted tomorrow.

All Trump "needs" is 34 votes for acquittal.

That’s true... he can meet that threshold but the truth is a majority of the Senate acquitting him matters... a lot.

“At this point, he gains nothing.”

He is positioning for a “moderate”, “elder statesman”, independent run in 2024.

Many of you can flame me if you will, but I never doubted her. I remember Kavanaugh. Susan is good with me. We disagree about somethings but I respect her candor.

I have to think deals have been made with Romney, and all this drama is just theater. “I struggled with this vote”, so that his new friends at CNN will understand the pain.

I believe 53-47 was in the bag from day 1. We shall see.
