This is the moment a former Manchester University student took his first steps in hospital since being struck down by a deadly flu virus while travelling in Thailand.
Ashley Shorley, of Thornton, Lancashire, was travelling in the Phi Phi islands when he contracted the flu on December 27.
He has been recovering in hospital ever since and underwent a five hour emergency operation to his lungs to save his life.
There were concerns Ashley contracted Chinese Coronavirus, which has so far contributed to nine deaths, but medics confirmed he was suffering from a severe strain of the virus known as Flu A.
Ashley required a ventilator to help him breath, but was moved from the intensive care unit at Bumrungrad Hospital, in Bangkok, earlier this week.
The 32-year-old's parents have since shared a video of him taking his first steps in the hospital, but said it was a struggle because he has lost so much weight.
Christopher Shorley, Ashley's father, said he has even been able to make a joke about Manchester United losing to Liverpool.
He said: "Ashley has been moved to a recovery ward now out of ICU.
"He still has some infection and puss in his lungs from empena, on oxygen, but doctors made him walk even though he lost so much weight.
"He looks like a skeleton in the video, it will takes months for him to recover properly and his lungs will never be the same.
"He is in pain constantly from operation, but this is enhanced by Manchester United losing to Liverpool, he says."
Christopher and Ashley's mum, Julie, cancelled their holiday in Spain and rushed to Thailand after receiving a photograph showing his lips turning grey.
He was initially being treated at a hospital in Phuket, but was then flown to a specialist

“moved from the intensive care unit at Bumrungrad Hospital”
If you are in Thailand and you need immediate hospitalization to save your life, that’s the place to go.
Wow. Hes actually walking really well considering the atrophy thats set in.
Glad they maintained their sense of humor.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
There are more deadly viruses out there than the corona virus. Here in New Mexico the hantavirus has about a 38 percent fatality rate and that rate is in a state with excellent treatment once diagnosed. The problem is that by the time professional treatment is sought, it has progressed far enough to cause pulmonary failure.
The cause is a virus carried in urine and fecal samples of the common deer mouse. Often humans catch it when sweeping or cleaning areas where deer mice have invaded homes, garages or outbuildings. To prevent contacting it, spray a solution of about 10 percent household bleach in the areas to be cleaned and wear a dust or surgical mask.

If it’s an enclosed space you can also use an ozone generator. Air it out before you go in because the ozone is not good for you either.

Apparently many deaths in Wu Han are being reported as caused by pneumonia and thus are not counted in the WuHan virus stats.
[Here is a link to a good detective story about how the hantavirus was finally identified as an agent of death in the southwest.
Death at the Corners A spate of sudden deaths in the Southwest has revealed a new viral villain. But is the virus really new—or an old one we’ve flushed out of hiding?]
I’m in remote Laos now, but headed back to Bangkok next week.
You can feel the tension here.
Here's a real laugh! The national Park Service has a Hantavirus FAQ in which they write "The deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) is the primary reservoir for Sin Nombre Virus, the strain of hantavirus responsible for the human cases in Yosemite National Park, and most human cases in the United States.
So the NAME of the virus is the "Sin Nombre Virus"? Somebody has a good sense of humor.
Exactly 2 months ago, Dec 5, it was at 330, it’s now at 734....gee that’s a shame
