So it is rather strange that Sanders has consistently refused to tell the press about his time there and the kibbutz he worked on. ........... I spent a year on a Kibbutz. It’s socialist, but everyone does work.

In the old days, a kibbutznik’s only private property was a toothbrush. Children grew up in such close quarters that no one married within his or her kibbutz; to do so was regarded as incest.
IIRC, upon reaching adulthood, kibbutzniks were free to decide whether to remain or to head for the cities. Most chose to leave.
The miracles of Israeli agriculture and Israel’s evolution away from socialism have turned most of the remaining kibbutzes into research facilities.
If Bernie were to visit Israel today, he would be in a steaming rage in mere seconds at all the “capitalist excesses”.

To be fair, there’s only ever been one world famous Jewish carpenter. So maybe the genes are to blame.

This was 1978. The Kibbutz was only 5 years old and was created by Americans who made Aliyah. Everyone had a job and did it. I think it was still a new smell to the socialist thing.
