Actually the idea of the EU dates from the 1815 Congress of Vienna and possibly earlier from Potocki’s plan for a Europe-wide union with different spheres (for latin, germanic, slavic etc. areas)
It surprising, go read Mosley’s arguments since in a more modern context.
