snip: But today, that symbiosis is off kilter: Americans interest in hunting is on the decline, cutting into funding for conservation, which stems largely from hunting licenses, permits and taxes on firearms, bows and other equipment.
Even as more people are engaging in outdoor activities, hunting license sales have fallen from a peak of about 17 million in the early 80s to 15 million last year, according to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service data. The agencys 2016 survey suggested a steeper decline to 11.5 million Americans who say they hunt, down more than 2 million from five years earlier.
The downward trends are clear, said Samantha Pedder of the Council to Advance Hunting and the Shooting Sports, which works to increase the diversity of hunters.
The resulting financial shortfall is hitting many state wildlife agencies.

I agree urban millennial snowflakes dont hunt
But I can tell you this
In areas where people do hunt its more costly and hunting leases are a at a premium compared to my youth
Its difficult honestly and expensive
More deer although cyclical natural diseases hurt this season in the south
Less ducks
Not sure about dove..
Turkeys ...everywhere
I would say that they understand cause and effect perfectly. Everything thing they do contributes to destroying America as it now stands. They just hope that you do not understand cause and effect and continue to contribute their efforts to destroying America to their stupidity. Instead of their evilness.
Excuse my fumble fingers with this phone. The first sentence should read “I hunted for decades”. The rest is kind of confusing but I think it can be made out. Forgive me.
When I was a kid, you could still buy clothing patterns and bolts of cloth at K-Mart and the like. My grandmother was quite a seamstress. Those days are long gone.
North Dakota checking in. Deer and turkeys are as thick as the mosquitos. Please feel free to come and take a few. (dozen)
“You better read and understand all the regulations before getting your license or you could find yourself in deep deer shit.”
And that is the problem, like everything they have overpriced and over-regulated themselves right out of business. Out here in the Southwest all big game tags are a lottery and you do not get your money back. It is now gambling and you are just throwing your money away 95% of the time. Who wants those kind of odds against them for the cost they want?
That’s a problem as others have pointed out, not only due to the lost revenue which helps conserve wildlife and undeveloped land but also because deer populations especially have exploded. Since we no longer have wolves anywhere in the East and since Black and Brown bears as well as Mountain Lions have been greatly reduced, there are no longer the apex predators to keep their populations under control.
My sister cannot garden any more because the deer come into her back yard and eat everything. One even gave birth in her back yard. When I walk my dog on the greenway we routinely encounter herds of deer which hardly bother noticing us as we walk by within 10 yards of them. They cause auto accidents and even some fatalities. They are a pest and need to be seriously culled.
Of course, no one points out the .223 round is a “varmint” round and not really suitable for larger game.
My local WalMart has fabric and patterns and does a good business in that department.
Well when the grid goes down hunting will go waaay up.
I don’t watch much TV but I do like shows about Alaska like Life Below Zero, Mountain Men, Alaska the Wild Frontier, Yukon Men and Alaska Bush People (Well, now Washington State People).
They’re not afraid to take an animal and it is done with respect and you still see the thrill of the hunt.
Homo Sapiens evolved to be hunter. Shame to see it die out.
There are too many deer.
One the way to work in early December, I hit one and had $2300 in damages to my car. My boss hit one the week before and it caused $7800 in damages.
The local land can’t support the number of deer here and many starve during the winter.
It doesn’t help that the Bambi-lovers made hunting illegal in this county.
“is now outfitter controlled.... @ $5,500 per hunt.”
Yep, they regulated and priced themselves right out of business.
Let's not use logic. Too early in the morning. :>)
I have discussed with liberals on this very topic. They do not get that a well managed hunting program is CRUCIAL to a healthy population. They look at me dumbfounded. Also, they have never spent one day in the woods.
I am a fisherman and the same applies. I don't hunt because I can't hit the backside of a barn with a shotgun. :>)
They’ll just make it up by raising cigarette taxes.
Wait a minute...
Now -- forget it. Almost everywhere I used to hunt is now cookie-cutter homes as far as the eye can see. Ranchers, fearing lawsuits, no longer give permission to hunt their lands any longer. If you have enough land to shoot on yourself, even then, 30+ years of brainwash has too many people dialing 9-1-1 at the sound of a shot; didn't used to be this way either.
Add to that all the time demands of work and family, and it's just not feasible.
Reminds me of a young twenty-something woman I worked with years ago. I was fascinated by the fact that her three hobbies were macramé, needlepoint, and deer hunting.
OK, now you have me curious. My Wal-Mart is pretty urban, may not have that department, but will look the next time I’m over there.
I mentioned our family’s ranch. I would always bring friends out (no charge) to shoot an antelope. No big deal. My father didn’t care for them. He passed in July and now my brother’s and I are trying to figure out what to do to keep our mother financially ok.
When I wasn’t bringing a friend out there and then, my folks would sell the land owner permits to a friend who would outfit. He sells these hunts for $3,500 each and my folks received $500 per hunt. Things are going to change now with my father out of the picture.
Alas, the good old days of building good will with neighbors and sharing resources has disappeared.
Even though it is the Washington Post, send them the link for this article.
The reporter actually makes that case.
