Footage of government officials in Wuhan appearing to take face masks intended for health workers battling the highly infectious coronavirus has fuelled a growing wave of anger over how Chinese authorities have handled the outbreak.
Images of medical staff making protective equipment out of rubbish bags, sleeping in hospitals, and crying in frustration and exhaustion have dominated Chinese social media over the last two weeks, inspiring an outpouring of sympathy and donations of supplies.

Correct, since 2016 they have been an Alibaba subsidiary. While they have some insulation from direct Party interference, the Party can pressure the paper through Alibaba.

If there’s a shortage of anything, communist party members will take whatever it is.

I kind of prefer that, to tell the truth.
But the version they publish, does have better coverage depth.

Thanks for that information - I hadn’t seen it before. Mind you, I had an immense amount of contempt for Friedman due to his complete and total idiocy on the Mideast (a place about which he claims to be an expert). This is icing on the cake, and shows his true colors (mostly red).
I ordered a type of pollution mask for exercise outdoors from the Chinese online order company Wish. It hasn’t arrived yet though it’s not way overdue. I wonder if my order has been intercepted.

Tough to ever believe anything coming out of China, even when you agree with it. Truth is rarely high on their agenda. It’s a cultural thing. Appearances are far more important.
