As far as I know, he Left the KKK far in his distant past. Whether any prejudices lingered, I really don't know.
The problem for me is that when Republicans run for office, they are tared and feathered with any detail that can be dug up.
Roy Moore, a man in his 60s was taken to task for his dating habits decades before. He was trashed for being removed from the Chief Justice of his state's Supreme Court twice.
Never mind that that he was removed for refusing to remove the Ten Commandments from a courthouse building, or refused to consent to processing same sex marriages in his state.
Boy, if you had a hang nail in the 70s 80s or 90s, you goose was cooked if you ran for office. The demoncRats would find out, and your career was over.
Add to this atmospphere, the fact that the demoncRats call us racists and palls with the KKK to this day.
Who was palls with the KKK? Why they were.
Does anyone think a Republican would be forgiven if he had been a simple Klan member years ago? What if he was a chapter leader of the KKK in the South? Does anyone believe a Republican would be forgiven for being a recruiter for the Klan?
Byrd bought into that sickening ideology so much so, that he was on fire to sell it to others.
The man served as a demoncRat U. S. Senator until he died in 2010.
IF there's a bigger hypocrite on the planet other than a demoncRat, I have no idea how they could possibly pull it off.
At the time of his death Robert “KKK” Byrd, DIMocRAT of WV, was the SERVING National Nighthawk of The Knights of The Invisible Empire of the Ku Klux Klan. - FACT.
On the night after his funeral, a FULL-DRESS KKK Funeral was held at his gravesite, complete with his Bible, revolver & his robe & hood neatly folded & placed on the grave.
Thereafter a 30 foot tall cross was burned “in his honored memory” on the tall hill overlooking his grave by his compatriots of the Klan.

How do we know he left the KKK?
