Maybe it’s the ChiComs’ plan to keep the quarantined humans fed.

DoughtyOne:" The question is, if anyone decides to ask it, are pets dropping dead? If not, this is nonsense. Keep the pets indoors until this is over."

The WORDS coming out of this flu situation are silly or mildly comforting... less deadly than the normal seasonal flu... but the ACTIONS are not casual...

For these kinds of choices to make sense the Chinese know something about this virus that they're not sharing with the rest of us.

If it's not that deadly, why are the Chinese cities still quarantined? Why kill pets? Why has Russia closed it's borders? Why are we holding American citizen who have flown in from that region?

GOPJ :" the Chinese know something about this virus that they're not sharing

True enough !
The Chinese have not been known for their candor or timeliness in prior viral issues.
It may have something to do with : "saving face".
I honestly don't know why they await until a health issue becomes almost a catastrophe.
Information in this posting is for informational purposes,
and indicates at least some investigation is needed in this area.
Again, prevention is more effective than cure after possible exposure. As I recall, this pet issue was raised during the Ebola virus outbreak also.

I'm glad the dog I had when I was in Thailand has long since passed on to doggie heaven. Best dog I ever had. Very affectionate and a very good watch-dog.

It actually is quite deadly, on a par with the influenza of 1917-1919, which killed millions.

Viruses with the highest case fatality rate typically are not very contagious, and thus do not have pandemic potential. Viruses that are highly contagious tend to have low to nonexistent death rates; almost no one dies of the common cold. This virus seems to occupy a "sweet spot," where it is a contagious respiratory virus and has a death rate high enough to be concerning, about 2%. If it reaches a point where it spreads uncontrollably, millions could die.

This type of an infection can be very disruptive.

If tens of millions of people come down with it, it can put a lot of pressure on the medical care facilities, the economy, and supplies. In China we’re talking about massive expense.

I don’t think China wants to go on record being known as the nation that infected the world either.

As for other nations, they are smart to try to avoid large outbreaks on their territory.

Those same pressures would be in play with them too.

To me, the real good news is that those infected outside of China are not dropping dead in the high percentages. (so far no one outside of China has died - we’re only talking about 142 people so far though - that number grew by 24 overnight)

It appears that if given decent medical care, people will survive this.

That premise is still in play until large amounts of the infected return to normal health.

Someday, after a disaster, many will be consumed by their pets.

Good points DoughtyOne... seems the best choice is to hope for the best and slowly start planning for the worst - there's still too many unknowns. But as you point out - there is hope.

This is a time when we are reminded that we need to prepare for the unknown. Are our supplies of water and food extensive enough?

Those who have followed what we know to be right, will be ready for this, as ready as anyone can be.

Did the Chinese engineer this virus to be transmissible through our pets, hmmmmm?

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

Any proven cases of spreading to or from pets?

I haven’t read of that, at all.

Stuff like this makes me wonder what the Chinese government knows about this virus and it’s ability to mutate, and change hosts and it’s ability to be spread by animals.

It’s very alarming when you think of the implications of the actions they are taking.

A couple nights ago, Shark Tank, had a guy trying to sell the idea of having bat houses in your back yard. Talk about bad timing.

Ok, so here’s what doesn’t make sense. They say it may have originated in snakes. Now they say kill Miss Kitty who keeps the neighborhood snake free. Without Miss Kitty, the snakes will be back in the neighborhood. Granted, it isn’t a good idea to have Miss Kitty snuggle up with her owners at night but then it isn’t a good idea for humans there to snuggle up with each other.

This may be why they give their children pet crickets so they don’t get too attached to the four legged pets.

IF. China's hospitals have been over run so very few are getting any sort of care. We would have people dying in the hallways if/when we get over run.

I don’t know enough to make really learned comments about how our hospital compare to theirs. I’d like to think ours are a lot better, and in my heart I believe they are.

About the only thing that can be done is medicating and hydrating. If it gets more extensive than that, you’re looking at running out of acute care beds, for sure.

You know, we generally have a good life. We’ve been free from the old scourges from the dark ages, the 1800s, the early 1900s. We’ve knocked out childhood diseases.

I don’t want be all fatalistic about it, but in truth we may have to accept a big event just like others in history have.

We do our best to avoid them, but at some point one may cause havok. I don’t believe this one is a major threat, if we use our heads.
