A Michigan family removed from an American Airlines flight in Miami when staff claimed they had body odour are suing the airline.
Yehuda Yosef Adler, his wife Jennie and their young daughter were removed from the flight to Detroit last January.
They claim staff made comments about their Orthodox Jewish faith.
American Airlines said the decision to remove the family was not based on religion. They claim customers complained about Mr Adler's odour.
The lawsuit, filed in Texas, cites defamation, emotional distress and discrimination relating to religion.
Mr Adler claims his family had been sitting on the plane for no more than five minutes when a member of staff told them there was an emergency and they needed to leave the aircraft.
When they left the plane, Mr Adler alleges staff told him the pilot was removing the family because of body odour. The lawsuit says a staff member "made a disparaging and derogatory statement telling the Adlers that he knew Orthodox Jews take baths once a week." The Adler family then approached people at the boarding gate asking them if they could smell any bad body odour.
They said they asked 20 people but not one said they could detect a smell.
Mr Adler also said they showered that morning.
They were provided with a hotel room and meals and were placed on a flight to Detroit the next morning. But they were without their luggage as it was not removed from their original flight.

My wifes family lived in Monsey - site of the recent shooting. They lived in the section that split off from the Orthodox section. Yes, the orthodox tended to have body odor. Nothing worse than many on the subway. But I wouldnt want to sit next to them for even a short flight.
Reminds me of the time I got on an elevator and just happened to be down a few steps from a woman, wearing a particular cultural garb, and it was fairly obvious that she had never had a personal encounter with a shower or bath and her clothes had never seen a washing machine. I’m still scarred. And I have always wondered how that tribe manages to propagate so successfully.
This has nothing to do with religion. They stank! The airline was right.
in today’s world there’s always someone raising a stink about something...
Stink, stank, stunk !?! Are they stinking grifters? Hey, lets stench up the place then sue ? Award them a bar of soap.
They would have sued anyone who answered "yes."
I think its the food and oil they consume...Middle eastern people can also have it.....
Many years ago I was on a nearly full non-stop flight from L.A. to Sydney Australia.
I sat just behind a clearly retarded man in his mid twenties traveling with his parents.
The stink was unbearable. As we were located near the galley the stewardess put on a very strong pot of coffee in an attempt to mask the hideously repellent odor.
Today I laugh about it but man oh man it was bad.
Yeah yeah I know we can’t say “retarded” any more...but he was.
I contracted to have some wooden products made in Slovakia. When the agent delivered the shipment to the warehouse, I invited him to my home for dinner. I had to warn my children that they would smell him- people in his country dont shower as frequently as we do. He was ripe. It is not religion.
Let me see if I have this right. A Jewish family claims they were treated unfairly because of their faith. In Miami. Seriously?
A guy I knew had to arrange NATO contracts in France. Yup. You can guess the rest of the story.
Maybe the flight crew was Anti-Smellite.
I think my husband would have welcomed a little stink compared to what he was made to sit through on a flight.
A woman came on ......throwing up.....sat next to my husband and vomited continuously.......the whole flight!
When he got home he wanted to burn his clothes!
I ran into two Russian Army soldiers in the American BX in Frankfurt, Germany in the 80s. I was suddenly hit by an invisible wall of stench. It was utterly the worst case of BO I ever had the misfortune of encountering.
Armpit Aroma, the new cologne from Max Sphincter.
We had consultant’s from Belgium and when they would come to the US, they would be ripe by the end of the week. They told us we were wasting water. Granted, before running water, many Americans bathed once a week.
