China's National Health Commission has announced that as of the end-of Thursday January 30, the total number of confirmed Wuhan coronavirus cases in mainland China had risen to 9,692.
That's a jump of 1,982 from the previous day, with the total figure now far exceeding the number of cases associated with severe respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2003 -- previously among Asia's worst outbreaks.
The death toll in mainland China has now reached 213, with 42 new deaths occurring in Hubei province -- the epicenter of the outbreak, and one in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang.
The death toll from the Wuhan coronavirus has risen in mainland China after more deaths were reported in the central province of Hubei.
Hubeis health authority said that 42 additional deaths were reported Thursday, bringing the death toll in the epicenter of the Wuhan coronavirus to 204.
This brings the total number of deaths in mainland China to 213.

Why should we accept and believe anything reported by the Chinese government? It is not quite a credible source.
I bought a lot of protective gear and bleach when the Ebola thing was happening. I live in a remote location but am down in the San Fernando Valley for business. Be home tomorrow. Until I see piles of bodies burning I’m not going to panic.
Don’t forget to wash your hands - a lot.
I have a small bottle of alcohol based sanitizer with me now, and my wife is very focused on staying prepared, so I am somewhat good.
We will see.
:)
Same here.
In part, yes, the flu has “saturated the population” and has a large number of hosts at any time. This Wu Han Virus is just getting started, has a higher transmission rate and (thus far) a substantially higher mortality rate. And it is not yet clear that it is the already health-compromised people that are dying. Since it appears to have a longish incubation period and becomes contagious before symptoms develop (so reported), it is probably far more widespread than the Chinese have acknowledged (and then there is their history of deliberate deception in these matters).
It isn’t time to panic yet, but some hunkering preparations are probably wise.
Very good and logical post.
Yeah if you did not order masks from Amazon by Sunday AM here in the states, you were not getting any. Found another unusual one in the paint department of a Lowes store. Has a R rating and carbon in it. There are places in China now where you have to wear a mask or you cannot enter. Good luck.
Number of fatalities divided by total cases resolved yields a net result of 53% fatalities.
Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
Snore
Double snore
Government propaganda alert
Mortality rate holding around 2.2%....
You can’t determine the mortality rate by dividing 213 by 9692. Even if you believe the govt numbers, both are increasing at unknown rates and there are too many other variables. I read several days ago that the govt was conceding a 4% mortality rate.
Based on some preliminary studies by Lancet on fixed samples of hospital patients, mortality rates are ranging from 10-15%.
With the Chinese govt I think it’s going to be longer than 2 weeks before we learn some pertinent details.
I stopped by the grocery just now. Picked up some things, including a little bottle of hand sanitizer. Already had some but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared.
Limit was one per customer. Got also lots of cleaning supplies, some dried food, mouthwash and toilet paper, as well as a couple candy bars. The dried food is just in addition what I had already, toilet paper I might get more of, in addition to more facemasks.
I feel sort of prepared, at least to start out.
Mortality rate of 2.2% is misleading since something like 95% are still sick and of those no longer sick, over half have died. Guess if you get sick, hope to stay sick as the alternative is not promising.
Thank Google for the news blackout.
” Found another unusual one in the paint department of a Lowes store. Has a R rating “
Mine are all PG and PG-13.
Above is a report on ways to disinfect things. I bought some vinegar upon hearing that it will kill viruses. Not this paper, but others, says vinegar only gets 80% of them.
This paper talks about Isopropyl Alcohol and Ethyl Alcohol - but the one one you use depends on whether the virus is a lipid or not. (My homework for the night).
Gesundheit!
Thanks, I would like to find that out also, if you figure that out.
:)
So not only is China no doubt lieing about the numbers, the tests themselves are probably not the most accurate.
