Swing vote Lamar Alexander to unveil Trump witness decision
NY Post ^ | Jan. 30, 2020

Critical swing-vote Sen. Lamar Alexander says he will announce Thursday night whether he’s voting to call witnesses in President Trump’s impeachment trial.

The retiring Tennessee Republican’s stance could dictate the outcome of a high-stakes vote on Friday and determine if Trump’s trial ends quickly or is extended weeks with witnesses.

...

“I have spoken to Lamar a number of times,” Cruz told reporters during the dinner break Thursday. “In terms of the votes, all 47 Democrats have been clear that they will vote to call additional witnesses. The big question is will four Republicans join the 47 Democrats? Two Republicans, Sen. Romney and Sen. Collins, have indicated publicly that they tend to vote that way and I think there are several other Republicans who may or may not join them.”

But the question is why?

It seems to me this is an open and shut case. No crime. No quid. No Quo. No withholding of aid. No delay of aid - it was delivered 3 weeks before the statutory deadline. It was not the first round of aid either. Ukraine elected a new government, POTUS Trump has a duty, responsibility and right to inquire about past conduct - and a Constitutional responsibility per Article 2 Section 5 that the aid be used appropriately. With Biden’s video floating out there, he had every right and responsibility to ask for an inquiry.

On the question of “abuse of Congress” it is nonsense. It should be dismissed. The House did not give the Executive an opportunity to challenge subpoenas in court. It is a premature allegation at best. It is not actually an impeachable offense per se.

I am not sure what benefit more witnesses will offer. Even if Bolton goes 100% against Trump he would be contradicted by Sondland’s testimony and text messages.

I don’t think Hunter Biden as a witness offers anything of value. The record is out there.

I think questions about how previous aid had been used are valid. But the defense has not had any time to interview them or prepare a case.

This whole thing is a farce. I don’t know what Lamar thinks can be gained from any of this. These are not crimes in any sense no matter the rhetoric from the left. The POTUS has an absolute right to inquire about precedent and to ensure that Congressional appropriations are going to be used as intended.

With the wealth he’s accumulated while “giving back to the people”, he can live in any gated, protected enclave he wants. He’s one of the main owners of Blackberry Farm (a fancy, schmancy private reserve for high rollers near Maryville, TN). Being an educator really paid off for Ol Flannel Shirt.

There is no safe space from certain people who do certain things for the government.

Sinema’s the real “bi-partisan wildcard” (pun intended). She could well be telling them one thing and then vote to acquit. She seems to enjoy being unpredictable.

Breathless pause as we read the announcement he’ll make an announcement...

Alexander will have less time to feather his own bed if this trial drags on.

The same one who, on another thread accused myself of not watching the proceedings at all. Per the Rand Paul question.

I tried to explain to the twerp that questions are sent to the chief Justice and He reads the questions.

Couldnt fathom that for some reason. You may be right..imbecile.

I would believe that Lamar would be the right guy to come forward and declare he has heard enough evidence and witnesses are not necessary. Otherwise, why let him make the announcement?
