Dr. Alexis Chavez: South Dakota law puts transgender youth lives at risk to forward a fear-mongering agenda

Denying transgender patients best-practice medical care is dangerous and harmful. Yet, state legislators in South Dakota, Florida and South Carolina have introduced legislation that would criminalize medically necessary care for transgender minors.

Gender-affirming care clearly demonstrates positive effects on mental health outcomes and overall psychological well-being, along with decreased suicidality. The proposed bill in South Dakota would make the provision of this lifesaving care a class 1 misdemeanor, threatening doctors with imprisonment. The bill, House Bill 1057, passed in the Statehouse by a vote of 46-23 late Wednesday. It now heads to the state Senate.

As the medical director at the world's largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ youth, I can tell you that these bills not only contradict reality and majority medical opinion in the United States - they would also put young lives in jeopardy.

We all agree that our nation’s youth deserve to be protected. In order to thrive, young people should be loved and provided for, with the care and support that they need - not used as political pawns to forward a fear-mongering agenda. We must listen to medical professionals, educate parents and legislators on the health of transgender youth, and correct the misinformation circulating on this issue. Affirming transgender youths saves lives.

Except that studies are negative to inconclusive — it is hardly accepted that treatment of minors provides overall positive outcomes.

80% of children expressing dysphoria end up accepting their biological sex by adulthood; and that is with some significant push now towards trying to convince them otherwise.

25% of people suffering gender dysphoria have attempted suicide, and 48% have suicide ideation.

But the suicide rate for people actually transitioned through medical means is higher.

Even the Obama administration found that positive medical treatment for dysphoria was unproven, even among adults:

“Based on a thorough review of the clinical evidence available at this time, there is not enough evidence to determine whether gender reassignment surgery improves health outcomes for Medicare beneficiaries with gender dysphoria. There were conflicting (inconsistent) study results—of the best designed studies, some reported benefits while others reported harms.”

SO the idea that something that can’t even be found to be helpful in adults, is so CERTAINLY helpful to children that we should ignore science and just experiment on them, is child abuse.

The “best practices” would be helping the young person rid their mind of the obsession that has taken over their sense of identity. There is nothing wrong with their brain, just their thinking, so the solutions are in psychiatry and psychology not in drugs or surgery. The solutions are no different than with other identity dysphoria cases. If someone’s identity dysphoria is that their right arm is not a legitimate part of their body, healthcare professionals do no say his arm should be cut off to make him “feel better”. They - psychiatry - work to help him rid of his mind of that obsession.

"It absolutely did. That's why the Hopkins surgeon who pioneered sex change surgery gave it up because it increased rather than decreased the mental issues of his patients."

And was shown the door, quietly. He is now Chief Surgeon Emeritus. They couldn't fire him, or burn him at the stake for blasphemy.

There is no room for the Truth in the Fairy World.

How long is the average transgender’s life span? Is it longer or shorter than the average homosexual’s life?

“I thought Johns Hopkins stopped doing these because they were still committing suicide anyway.”

You are correct. In fact, the suicide rate is higher AFTER transitioning.

= = =

So for males who can no longer think with their ‘bits’, will have decreased mental issues?

Doctors “proving” themselves right again with studies done by and for each other. The medical industry is rife with fraud and mental studies are especially fictitious.

I would like to know what percent of children referred to her clinic are not diagnosed as being the wrong gender. My bet is close to 100% of kids brought to her clinic by nutty parents are diagnosed as having the wrong gender and are put on a years long course of expensive therapy. The damage to the long term physical and mental health of these kids caused by these “therapies” will in time be seen as an epidemic of cancers, surgical complications and mental health issues including suicides. Bravo for the South Dakota Legislature for stopping these radical treatments on young kids.

I searched for Dr Chavez, and, yes, he is a dude. Most interesting: he’s putting together a grant proposal to study brain development in kids taking puberty suppression drugs and hormones. Dr John Whitehall wrote a paper saying those drugs reduce brain size!
