Earlier this month, the Taiwanese people reelected President Tsai Ing-wen to office with historic levels of support. President Tsai’s dedication to defending Taiwan in the face of constant hostility from the mainland Chinese Communist Party is inspiring...

[N]ow is the time for the U.S. government to strengthen our ties with Taiwan and counter China’s efforts to interfere with U.S. security interests and partners in the Indo-Pacific...The Trump administration should also commit to negotiating a new free trade agreement between Taiwan and the United States this year.

I hope Trump does this. Taiwan's economy has more in common with Britain's than it does with the PRC.

I think Taiwan needs to spend more on defense, whether it’s indigenous defense systems or the country’s force structure, and senior US officials should start jawboning the country to do so. American resupply won’t help Taiwan if the country is overrun by the time those supplies show up.

Agreed. Ultimately only the Taiwanese themselves can guarantee their own freedom.

I’ve spent a fair bit of time in Taiwan, and I’ve always felt their elites have bought-in to, and are prepared to run-off to, another place (almost always China, the USA, or possibly Japan) as a kind of insurance at the first sign of trouble.

I realize Taiwan is a small country and life there has not been stable or easy until recently - but I don’t want American money and lives to support such people.

Nixon went to China to bring that communist state into the world of trade.....part of the globalist plan.....and China wanted to make sure Taiwan was pushed aside as an illegitimate country.

We should be using Taiwan as a beating stick over the Chinese economy. Taiwan would LOVE to have American money coming in again.

I have mixed thoughts on Taiwan. I’ve stuck my neck out before supporting their autonomy, only to have political figures there talk of reunification as if it’s a certainty at some point.

Defending Taiwan would cost American youth their lives. I’m not convinced I want to back a nation that toys with the idea of reunification, from being unified with China.

Taiwan’s independence relies on strong ties to regional allies (Japan, Philippines, and South Korea in particular) that would simply be the next conquest of Red China; they are the containment squad.

I have no issue with a unified Taiwan/China.
So long as it’s Taiwan that takes control.

Marco wake up we already sold Taiwan 208 Abrams tanks and 250 stinger missiles plus millions in training and upgrading their F16 fleet in 2019. Now this year we are selling them a bunch of F16V’s with upgraded radar and avionics that make them competitive with the F35. What more do they need?

Our ally is a nuclear power.
They are capable of defending themselves and did so during eight years of Clinton and eight years of Obama.

No it would be 1982-3, since they have had nukes for nearly forty years.

I could see the Red Chinese government pouring money into the Democratic Presidential candidate’s campaign on the theory that a Democrat President will cater to them and might even look the other way if they invaded Taiwan. Joe Biden in particular is beholden to the PRC.
