Six thousand people on board a cruise ship in Italy have been barred from disembarking, after a Chinese passenger developed symptoms of coronavirus.
The 54-year-old and her travelling companion are being held in isolation on the ship while tests are carried out.

The Costa Smeralda cruise ship has docked in the port of Civitavecchia, north of Rome.
The woman who is receiving treatment had reportedly flown from Hong Kong to join the cruise, and broke out in a fever while on board.
The ship has taken on medical experts from Rome's Spallanzani hospital, which specialises in infectious diseases.
Initial tests have come back negative, according to Italian news agency Ansa.

“”In the last few days the progress of the virus, especially in some countries, especially human-to-human transmission, worries us,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday.
He named Germany, Vietnam and Japan, where there have been cases of people catching the virus from others who have been to China.
“Although the numbers outside China are still relatively small, they hold the potential for a much larger outbreak,” the WHO chief said. “

Millions of Chinese in Africa. Just wait until the Coronavirus hits places like Mogadishu, Nairobi, Kinshasa...
Cruise ship = Petri dish.
It won’t be long while they are stuck on that thing until they all come down with some wretched disease.
It might not actually go through Africa. We’ll have to wait and see.
SARS virus didn’t LIKE hot and humid temps. It broke down and lost infective potential rapidly over about 35C temps.
This isn’t that SARS though.
We can hope.
Someone the other day said, “Just wait until it hits India”
Excellent point re: the large numbers of Chinese in Africa. If this nasty virus were to take hold in Africa’s teeming, filthy cities, Katie bar the door.
You hit the nail on the head. That’s where I always wanted to be and that is on a cruise ship with a potential for an infectious disease. Just about as bad as the confined environment of an airplane.
At least those places don’t have insanely politicized federal judges who will issue nationwide injunctions ruling any governmental action aimed at quarantine to be “unconstitutional”. Those countries shoot first and ask questions later. We used to do that. Not anymore.
You have to be straight up stupid to get on a cruse ship, even in the best of times.

Maybe he should have said that it was worrisome that it has spread to so many countries so quickly. That would make sense, and not make him look like a complete putz.

Lol. Are you a germaphobe?
Why would anyone want to go on a cruise with 6,000 other people? That ship looks like a floating tower-block. Imagine a breakdown of the toilet system.

Seriesly? We’ve sailed numerous ships over the years, never had an issue with norovirus or other maladies.
I know folks like to use broad brushes here.. but seriesly.

I know people who love it, and have had no problems, but I can’t help agreeing with you.
I’ve never been on one.
One of my best friends is getting back from China in a couple of days. He is supposed to come help me cut down some tall firs. I am not going to nag him about it for a few days after he gets back.
