U.S. life expectancy has improved for the first time in four years, thanks to a sharp decline in the cancer death rate and to a drop in fatal drug overdoses. The new increase is small, but marks at least a temporary halt to the trend. (Jan. 30)

“The really rich folk are not obese at all.”
My brother is very wealthy, $4.5 million dollar home wealthy.
He lives in a super wealthy area.
All the people are super fit. I’m 25 lbs overweight on a 6-3 frame and felt morbidly obese.
At his daughters HS graduation party all the moms were super hot and fit and numerous trophy wives.
No tat’s and no smokers either.
I’m just hoping to make it six more to retirement!
Actually was surprised to see it reported at all. I guess the writers at AP didn't see the kill sign from Stephanopoulos in time.
“This is a hugely significant piece of news”
It meant much less to me when I learned that it includes deaths due to accidents, suicides, drug use.
Excluding those what’s happening to life expectancy?
I agree. Drug overdoses, suicides, homicides, and any kind of accidental death shouldn’t be counted in the life expectancy rate. All of those things will bring the rate down especially since most of these involve younger people
Growing up in the 1960s I heard that you can’t be too rich or too thin. Of course smoking helped, but in 1964 when the first Surgeon General’s report came out my parents quit.
I’m a cancer success story, with four bouts of prostate cancer in 17 years, I should have lived no more that 7 years.
My wife recently discovered some online pictures of me as a teenage sailor aboard the USS Saratoga, I could not believe how slender I looked. I was six four and about 190 and wearing jeans with a 33 waist size. I was born in 1944 and back then six four and 190 was big for a college football player, now someone that tall and thin looks like a skeleton. Two hundred was huge when I was young, now I weigh 238 without clothing and still only wear size 36 waist pants. The guys I knew as fatties in high school would be the little fellows now. The ones who were considered muscular then would look like runners now but most teenagers now are not half as strong as my high school classmates.
To celebrate my longer life, I have extended my mortgage another five years.
lol...something to live for?
Yeah, I figure so long as I have bills to pay, it will be just my luck that I’m kept alive to keep paying them. Guys like me just can’t catch a break.
Here in north Jersey we still have about one train strike per week; there is no recovery here due to self-inflicted Dem taxes and regulations.
When I was a teen, I had a friend named larry. Everybody called him fats and he was not insulted. Today, he would be pretty normal as a 13 year old
I hear ya, I live in the Peoples Republic.
Jan 30: Flights from China halted.
