President Trump's team argued that all politicians view their own reelections as being in the public interest, because THEY are best equipped to work the problems of their districts, states, and the nation.
Therefore, Trump's team alleged, actions taken that have both national and personal election benefits, are seen by politicians as beneficial to the nation because their own elections are necessarily beneficial to the nation.

That was not their argument at all, but NYT is gonna NYT...
It was the first question from Collins, about a POTUS having multiple reasons to do something, only one of them being his own political benefit. The answer, among other arguments, noted that many times, a President’s political agenda, and even reelection could well be considered “for the benefit of the country”. It was a good answer to a question, I believe was asked to give cover to Collins. I think she might have asked this leading question to support a vote against witnesses, but certainly for acquittal.
