Virus cases in China top SARS as evacuations begin

BEIJING -- Countries began evacuating their citizens Wednesday from the Chinese city hardest-hit by a new virus that has now infected more people in China than were sickened in the country by SARS.

The number of confirmed cases jumped to 5,974, surpassing the 5,327 in mainland China during the SARS outbreak in 2002-2003.

The death toll rose to 132, which is still lower than the 348 people who were killed in China by SARS. Scientists say there are still many critical questions to be answered about the new virus, including just how transmissible and severe it is.

A Japanese flight that brought back evacuees from the city of Wuhan included four passengers with coughs and fevers. Two were diagnosed with pneumonia.

The three men and one woman were taken to a Tokyo hospital in separate ambulances for treatment and further medical checks. Another woman developed nausea at the airport and was also hospitalized.

It wasn’t immediately known whether they were infected with the new type of coronavirus, which first appeared in Wuhan in December. Its symptoms, including cough and fever and in severe cases pneumonia, are similar to many other illnesses.

China’s latest figures added 26 deaths, all but one in Hubei province and its capital, Wuhan. The number of cases rose 1,459 from the previous day, a smaller increase than the 1,771 new cases reported on Monday. More than 50 infections have been confirmed abroad.

So they infected the entire flight, crew, terminals, and aircraft.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

“So they infected the entire flight, crew, terminals, and aircraft.”

That means they’ll need to quarantine the passengers, flight crew and terminal employees. They they can burn the airplanes and terminal to the ground and build new ones.

Probably would have said the same thing about the Spanish Flu of 1918 when it was estimated that about 500 million people or one-third of the world’s population became infected with this virus. The number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide with about 675,000 occurring in the United States.

We had a family member who contracted the Spanish flu in 1918.

She lived to be over a hundred.

I don't know. I'm puzzled at why China and the rest of the world seems to be reacting in such a panic situation. Either the Chineses are playing this up for some ulterior motive or they're not telling us the whole story and it is far worst than we're being led to believe. I don't think this is like some of the other pandemic flus of the recent past. Something is not right.

“...and it is far worse than we’re being led to believe.”

I don’t look at the fake number of cases. I look at over 50 million people being put in quarantine and roads being torn up to prevent travel (by the government) to make my own assessment of how serious this is.

Well it is what it is. If that many people are going to die, then they’ll die.

The fact is the virus is out there already, do the best to contain it and if you believe in God you shouldn’t fear death as much as many others do.

No sense panicking.

She was fortunate she wasn’t one of the 50,000,000 who didn’t die from it. She was very fortunate and obviously blessed. And many others didn’t die either but 50,000,000 others weren’t so lucky were they?

Most of those 50,000,000 died from bacterial pneumonia that is now treatable. The 1919 flu virus itself was rarely fatal.

I don’t look at the fake number of cases.

Nor do I. But I look at the fake number of fatalities and understand that it is hard to hide deaths, notwithstanding rumors of warehouses of bodies. Without a lot more fatalities, this looks like a virus that has spread a lot in eight weeks and killed a small fraction of victims. Alternatively it has not spread much in eight weeks and killed 2 or 3 percent of victims. The latter is a serious virus, but hard to spread.
