This is a perilous time for a fair and passionate judge to leave the bench. By doing so, they risk having Donald Trump appoint their replacement, and considering Trumps policies and beliefs, that new appointee is pretty likely to have a harsh anti-immigration stance.
But dozens of immigration judges have reported that despite their efforts to stick out the presidency, theyve just reached their breaking points. The Los Angeles Times spoke with dozens of judges who are quitting or taking early retirement because they simply cannot stomach having to enforce Trump administration policies on immigrants.
Immigration Judge Charles Honeyman served for 24 years on the bench, and thought he still had more time in him. But this month he quit. He told the paper he pushed back against Trump as best he could, doing things like granting asylum for domestic violence victims from other countries, even after the administration released an order saying domestic violence isnt a valid reason for asylum.
There are a lot of cases Im going to have to deny that Ill feel sick over, Honeyman said as he reached his breaking point and quit.
A. Ashley Tabaddor, a Los Angeles judge and president of the National Association of Immigration Judges union, called working under the Trump administration unbearable.
Judges are going to other federal agencies and retiring as soon as possible, Tabaddor said. They just dont want to deal with it.
Jeffrey Chase, a former immigration judge from New York, has formed a group for all the judges nationwide who have quit under this administrations rules. He said he now has 40 members.

And good riddance to them.
They are DEMOCRATS....Good Riddance!!!
When ya gotta go, ya gotta go.
Pushed back? Arrogant swot.
The are Judges. Why do they need a union? Who is oppressing them?
Correct.
And neither are these.
You cannot grant asylum for domestic violence. If so, you will be flooded with petitions, mostly bogus. A huge “domestic violence” enterprise would arise, like the birth tourism industry. Domestic violence is a local issue, just like gangs. The other countries need to deal with it.
Petty tyrants who don’t think that We The People set policy through our elected officials.
Trump has not made law, but merely insisted existing law be followed. If those people who call themselves judges cant follow the law they have no business being on the bench and probably be charged with fraud. Dont let the door hit you on the way out.
I’m good with this.
They are DEMOCRATS....Good Riddance!!!
...
I agree. This is great news.
Trump is winning again.
AMF
Look!!! Far right. Its a Norwegian Blue...
This is another big win for America, and I’m still not tired of winning!
And they are not Welcome Wagon ladies.
Good. These eunuchs and sore losers can go play golf. I hope his group grows quickly as so-called judges who are nothing but corrupt gatekeepers leave the trade.
Amen. They also end to be committed liberals who reflexively look for ways to grant relief to immigrants even when law and policy are against it.
In order for Justice to take place Judges must enforce the law with their brains not their hearts. Any real Judge learns in law 101 that there is a thin line between justice and tyranny. That line is impartiality. If law is subjected to emotionality, the law becomes unjust as the whims of politicians favor one litigant over others
Of such are the whips of tyranny made.
UNION: Proof that they are a political animal, not principled.
