Nissan takes the axe to the house Ghosn built (Renault-Nissan alliance collapse)
Nasdaq ^ | Jan 28, 2020 | US Markets EXCLUSIVE-Do or die: Nissan takes the axe to the house Ghosn built Contributor Norihiko

Nissan 7201.T is planning aggressive cost cuts to deal with an unexpected slump in sales as the expansionist strategy it inherited from fugitive former Chairman Carlos Ghosn flounders, four people familiar with the plans said.

Japan's second biggest carmaker is set to eliminate at least 4,300 white-collar jobs and shut two manufacturing sites as part of broader plans to add at least 480 billion yen ($4.4 billion) to its bottom line by 2023, two of the people told Reuters.

The moves come on top of a turnaround plan unveiled in July and are likely to include cutting Nissan's range of cars and the array of product options and trims in each line, slashing jobs mostly at head offices in the United States and Europe, and reducing advertising and marketing budgets, they said.

"The situation is dire. It's do or die," a person close to Nissan's senior management and the company's board told Reuters.

...People familiar with the plans said the axe was also likely to fall at Nissan's North American head office in Tennessee and its European headquarters in Geneva, as they were bloated with high-spending sales and marketing staff.

While Peugeot-Citreon combines with Fiat-Chrysler and Volkswagen expands, we have Nissan-Renault going the opposite way.

Hey, Nissan.

Bring back the “Hardbody” pickup!

Nissan’s merging with Renault was a disaster for quality. I made the mistake of buying a Nissan truck years ago thinking it to be similar in quality to Toyota and Honda and it turned out to be nothing but a money pit piece of junk.

Nissan went from a Toyota equivalent to a crap car in a short time after the purchase. I have zero respect for Nissan cars, though I used to see them as very good cars.

I’m also a frequent viewer of Scotty Kilmer, so that may have something to do with it. :)

Ha! you and I are on the same page with Nissan. Both what they are and what they used to be.

When Nissan merged with Renault, it was all down hill quality wise for Nissan. Very bad merger.

If they cut the cord with Renault and go back to designing quality cars like they did in the 90’s they may save them selves.

I like hearing Scotty Kilmers take on Nissan on Youtube. He rips them for their downward spiral in quality since the merger and especially their crappy Jacco transmissions.

I think quality is slipping all around. The only brands I would consider are Toyota, Honda, Mazda and Subaru. I have two fifteen year old Honda Elements I’m driving into the next millennium. I just have to keep them away from the Honda dealership. I try to keep it simple, no turbos and no CVT’s. CAFE standards and boardroom engineering are hurting quality. There’s no reason any modern car shouldn’t turn 200K. It’s all the gizmos that limit longevity, not the powertrain.

The weak link in “modern” cars is the transmission. They will blow before 200K and then you have a tough decision to make. Spend $3-$4K on a trans job or ditch it and get another car.

Don’t sleep on Hyundai / Kia. Top five brands for quality. Love my Elantra GT Turbo Sport. Five year bumper to bumper, 10 year power train warranty to boot.

Nissan was always worse engineered than Toyota but more luxurious for the money and more pleasant to ride. I don’t think their alliance with Renault changed it. Renault are okay cars too. They probably has the rest marketing in the car industry especially in developing markets.

Heh. I hit a deer with my first gen Scion xB at 155k miles. It now looks terrible, but it has 220k miles on it and runs great. Like you, I’m looking forward to leaving it to my kids when I die a couple of decades from now. :)

I also have 185k miles on my Scion FR-S. It has been almost as reliable (needed a throw out bearing at 150k miles while the xB has not needed any such repair), but I trust both cars.

I’m a huge fan of timing CHAINS, and that’s what both have.

We’re planning on a new car in the next couple of years for touring the country when I retire (within the next twelve months. Could be next week...). It will be a Toyota Camry. I’m not even looking at anything else.

My 2013 Grand Cherokee blew the heads at 60,000 miles. Chrysler would do NOTHING to assist in the repairs.

I've been a Jeep fan for decades. Not anymore.

I also won't buy anything GM (auto union bailouts under Obama) so it looks like Honda, Toyota or Ford for me going forward. Thus far, the Toyota Tacoma seems to be winning as my next vehicle.

The Nissan GTR is a great car (as is the Mitsubishi EVO X) but one car can’t save a company.

I have a 2001 F-150 with 184,000 and all I’ve done is tires, oil and gas. Pretty sturdy truck that has hauled 4 kids’ junk to 4 universities and first apartments multiple times. I can’t get rid of it even though the paint job is crapping out and the cruise control on the F150 quit last month.

I bought 2 a toyota corolla and one a toyota tacoma and they’ve had no mechanical problems with them.

I think a lot of it has to do with maintenance.

Current GTR is a POS. It’s not worth it.
I owned a 1993 and 1998 turbocharged Skylines which were mostly the same but they were $25-32k cars at the time. These were great for the money.
GTR was available as a top trim for these. The difference being 2.6 twin-turbo on manual transmission and tuned up everything but it wasn’t extraordinary better than the much more affordable standards.

Still not a bad looking car even if they haven't changed body-wise in the last several years. Of course, if they brought back the original...
