NPR reporter Mary Louise Kelly dismissed the idea that journalists interview top government officials to score "political points," pushing back on Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's remarks following a clash between the pair after an interview last week.
Kelly, co-host of NPR's "All Things Considered," wrote in a New York Times op-ed on Tuesday night that being able to hold powerful people accountable is "both a privilege and a responsibility."
"There is a reason that freedom of the press is enshrined in the Constitution. There is a reason it matters that people in positions of power people charged with steering the foreign policy of entire nations be held to account. The stakes are too high for their impulses and decisions not to be examined in as thoughtful and rigorous an interview as is possible," she wrote.
"Journalists dont sit down with senior government officials in the service of scoring political points. We do it in the service of asking tough questions, on behalf of our fellow citizens. And then sharing the answers or lack thereof with the world."

I'm sick of sanctimonious journalists who believe they're the most important people in the world. They're as obnoxious as actors who prattle on and on about 'the craft'.
Now this NPR hack runs to the NYT because she and the NYT believes an op-ed gives her legitimacy and credibility.
"Journalists dont sit down with senior government officials in the service of scoring political points"
Like hell they don't baby. It's not about reporting facts anymore. It's 'Gotcha Journalism'. It's about 'creating a narrative' and promoting an agenda.
Not sure who they think they’re foolin’, but they ain’t.
So where are the questions for Biden? I have not seen that interview yet. Seems like that would be important if he is going to be the president.
Lol
Yeah, right. And I’m the Pope.
Elections have consequences? Never when it comes to NPR! Sick to death of them. I am old enough to remember contributing to them because I liked classical music and Click and Clack.
Well said.
And I don’t breathe to take in air.
LOL
They really do think we’re all stupid.
Shame on them!
Wonder if she has tried her “tough, gotcha” questions with Hunter B.
What a bunch of hypocrites.
yeah i remember all those tough obama interviews.
However, the responsibility that goes with that right is to tell the truth...
Could NPR point out someone, anyone, on their staff who is a Republican, or even someone who has voted for a Republican presidential candidate.
This is definitely #FakeNews.
A NPR reporter can’t point to commentary on NPR’s website—too tough to handle.
Defund NPR and PBS. Been saying this for 30 years. The government should not be underwriting broadcasters. Back when there were only 3-4 networks, this might have made sense. In today’s 100+ channel universe, it does not.
Liar.
I’m rolling on the floor.
These people live in an echo chamber. They just like to hear themselves talk.
She is either a filthy liar, or she is suffering from an anti-Torah delusion of cosmic proportions . The latter seems to be the case across a broad spectrum of elites. Once you accept the great ontological lie about man and the universe, everything else is viewed through that lens. You cannot receive correction, because you have been induced to give your heart and soul to the spirit of Anti-Torah, know in Christianity as Anti-Christ. Hatred of G-ds Law and His sexual ethic is is at the core of the Leftism that animates PBS, the rest of the media, and the Democrat Party apparatchiks they adore. Eventually, faith in the plain meaning of scripture will land you and your family in prison, or worse.
