Three promising bills could provide property tax relief for Idahoans

There is, perhaps, a glimmer of hope for people like Boise’s Kari Wardle. Kari, 40, juggles full-time employment and raising a 5-year-old boy, while caring for her terminally-ill mom. But it’s her rising property taxes that have her really rattled.

“My wages don’t increase enough every year to offset these costs,” Wardle explained. “With medical expenses and my child, even with working a full time job, we are barely getting by. If property taxes increase again next year, I honestly have no idea what we will do!”

Some relief, however, may be on its way, in the form of three bills that have been introduced at the Idaho Legislature. First up is House Bill 355, which would freeze property tax collections at their current levels. Because of the way Idaho’s property tax system works, this measure by itself would provide meaningful, timely relief for many Idaho property owners, regardless of the type of property. These taxpayers are projected to save a combined $113 million during the one-year freeze should the legislation pass. It has the backing of House Majority Leader Mike Moyle of Star, House Assistant Majority Leader Jason Monks of Meridian, and Senate Local Government and Taxation Committee Chairman Jim Rice of Caldwell.

Moyle is also floating House Bill 353. Though not as ambitious as House Bill 355, this measure would do much to rein in government spending. If passed, the bill would let each local government increase its total property tax collections by three percent — and nothing more. House Bill 355 would close loopholes that allow local governments to increase property tax-derived spending by a lot more.

Tax relief is directly proportional to the number of liberal politicians in jail.

Hopefully these reforms go through. In my opinion, there should be caps or limits on how high tax rates can go, for all types of taxation.

Anyone ever calculate how much you pay in all types of taxes, including income tax, both federal and state, sales tax, gasoline tax, various excise taxes, property tax, AND,

AND, the fact that you are reimbursing all the businesses you buy goods and services from , for THEIR taxes which they pay as a cost of doing business.

If calculated, I bet we would all be shocked at how much we pay in all types of taxes.

We really need to cap the assessments. Idaho is booming because people are flocking here - too many from CA, OR & WA. Because house prices are jumping, our taxes are going up. A house should be assessed at its most recent sale value. And not re-assessed for tax purposes until it’s sold again.

At least, that’s my opinion!

You have to beat the Democrats at every level of government to keep them from stealing.

If you win at the federal level, they’ll raise taxes at the state level or the county level or the city level.

Democrats see taxes as one big piggy bank to rob.

Property taxes and unfunded government mandates that force counties to tax to provide government programs BOTH have people moving out of New York in droves.

The money is going somewhere.

Try to get the State/County to open their books, - Good Luck.

Arizona is the same.

Property taxes on homes and vehicles should be banned via a Constitutional Amendment.

The notion that you can never really own property because you have to FOREVER pay rent on it to the government violates the very notion of property ownership.

No one, and I mean NO ONE should ever be faced with losing their home to a damned tax collector!!!

Property taxes are probably one of the most cruel of all taxes. Gross receipts taxes are another one.

At least with income tax you may be earning enough money to pay the tax and when the income ends so does the tax.

Property tax does not have any such “protection”.

O.K. No one has said it yet, but property taxes are rising outrageously in my part of Idaho because the local public school “teachers” can get a ballot measure voting themselves a pay raise anytime they want one. When they lose, they just get a special ballot scheduled for an off Tuesday, until they get the money they want.

Property tax is just another form of welfare for the specially entitled.

Chicago did a deal a few years ago, where they got a cash infusion, based on projected parking meter income for decades to come.

I don’t recall all details, but, have heard that all the money they got from.thst deal is gone.

Chicago has severe budget problems. That could even be a reason Rahm Emmanuel chose not to run for reelection, so he wouldn’t have to face Chicago’s SHTF moments.

After awhile, you have to believe that anybody investing in Chicago or Puerto Rico is just laundering money.

No sane person would invest there.

Here where I live in Tennessee my property taxes are less than $700 per year. We have an 8 3/4 sales tax on just about everything which I believe is a fair way to spread the burden to everyone. No state income tax either. I far prefer a sales tax, as there is no way for anyone to pay less than their “fair share”.

I believe that each tax district, whether it is a city or county or state, should be able to dictate how it is allowed to raise taxes.

If a city wants to raise property taxes 10% or 20%, let them try. If the citizens are too lazy or busy to vote the bums out, then they deserve to pay those higher taxes.

When I was in Colorado the house prices were soaring as the Californians moved in, but the city council lowered the mill levy to keep our property taxes stable.

In California we used to have Republican mayors that kept their city's taxes low while Democrat mayors kept their taxes increasing. This allowed Republicans like Pete Wilson to run on a good government program and win the governorship.

Now all localities are forced to the same rules and there is not a dimes worth of difference between Republican and Democrat mayors. This is one of the reasons it will be difficult for a Republican to become governor in California.

Forcing all localities to live by the same rules may be good in the short term, but as we can see in California it just leads to more statewide control. And when the Democrats gain control of the statehouse (which they eventually will in Idaho) then the remaining Red cities will have to dance to their tune.

This is where the liberals can be of help. You can lobby and get a bill passed that all voting in the city/county must be on weekends. Because, you know, poor people and illegal aliens are too busy to vote on Tuesday.

If the teachers schedule a vote, at least it will be easy to round up enough people to vote against them.

You need to drive out the kalifornians that have invaded. And send a message to those planning to invade.

I agree.

My county, Gallatin, MT, is reassessing every two years and making some very powerful folks mad, we’ll see what happens next year in the legislature (they only meet every two years on the odd year and do NOT get paid much more than a per diem).
