CDC Split With China on Coronavirus Spread as Possible U.S. Cases Hit 110

IF we go with the official numbers from China, 2019-nCoV’s level of contagion seems modest: It is certainly not up there with something like measles, and maybe not even “the common cold” (on average). Yet the continued steady growth in numbers of confirmed infected people would seem to indicate that even extreme containment measures are only partially successful. Therefore I find it worth asking the CDC if they are taking into account those containment measures, given that such would be very hard to impose in the US short of a dire emergency situation?

Most projections of a coronavirus outbreak suggest that once one gets into the hundreds of thousands or more people infected, developed countries may be able to keep it out for a while, but sooner or later it breaks through. “Life finds a way”, as it was put in Jurassic Park.

Of course, we do have other information, the most significant being the actions the Chinese Gov’t is taking. How does the CDC interpret and consider that information? That may not be strictly “scientific data”, but it seems to me that if the CDC gives briefings on this sort of situation, *somebody* needs to ask how CDC accounts for the actions of the Chinese Gov’t in the CDC’s assessment of the situation.

Bring Out Your Dead

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

If this is a pseudo-typed genetically engineered virus, and the genes for the altered envelope proteins are expressed in a cell line used for replication - but not in the viral genome itself, then this will quickly fizzle. We shall see.

False. Health officials have given them instructions and asked them to self quarantine. And I didn't see a quote of the CDC arguing against asymptomatic transmission.

Maybe, but I really don’t think racism is at the heart of it.
Probably a lot of those 120 just happened to be sitting near one of the known cases. They may not be POC.

I think the CDC just has a dim view of quarantines and is very reluctant to resort to that. And if there is an outbreak...it bolsters their status and they can request more funding.

You’ve seen it with SARS, Ebola, and now Coronvirus. That poor nurse who got Ebola here in the US, will probably never be the same.

I think the WHO, the CDC and China, have improved a lot since SARS, but they still aren’t willing to do what it takes to protect people.

If it spins up like it has in china we will get an NHS whether we want it or not.

The truth will likely be somewhere in between - also likely many of the cases “being evaluated” is that with all the stories out there, someone gets a cold or mild case of Flu and panics...
