As authorities in China scrambled to handle a coronavirus that has killed at least 81 people, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday described a surging potential crisis even as they pushed back on the latest thinking from Beijing about just how easily it spreads.
Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters that the number of confirmed cases stateside had reached five—and that there had been a total of 110 “persons under investigation” for the virus in 26 states over the past week.
Thirty-two of those people tested negative, and there had been no confirmed person-to-person transmissions inside the country, Messonnier said on Monday.
The confirmed cases in the U.S. include patients in Orange County, California; a man in his 30s in Washington state; a woman in her 60s in Chicago; a passenger who felt ill after flying into Los Angeles International Airport; and a student at Arizona State University who does not live in university housing, the CDC said on Sunday. All of the U.S. cases appeared to involve patients who had recently traveled from Wuhan, China—the epicenter of the deadly virus.
Seventy-three people were still being evaluated for the virus as of Monday.
“We understand that many people in the United States are worried about this virus and how it will affect Americans,” Messonnier said, adding that “risk depends on exposure,” which for Americans remained “low” on Monday.
In each U.S. case, health officials have said they will trace the patient’s contacts and identify anyone who may have had prolonged exposure, then monitor those individuals for symptoms. In the U.S., anyone who has had close contact with confirmed patients has not been quarantined unless and until they display symptoms.

I have to admit that many responses here to various events are about as logical and clearly-spoken as a Biden-Sanders-Warren debate.
There should be a ban on all incoming Chinese until this is under control. American tourists shouldn’t be going there.
Trusting our govt is an even less logical response.
I was wondering if maybe China would like to see panic and market correction in the US? Maybe just testing us to see how quickly our defenses are put in place? I sure do hope that is all it is, but doubt it.
I’d go with: Close the borders, now. For the duration.
If a disease like this gets out of control the pharmaceutical stocks would go through the roof as would companies producing goods domestically.

Mixture of our natural distrust of any agency, 30 years of novels and movies about virus outbreaks that people think has turned them into experts, an annoying nihilism of the past 10 years, and people that hang on every word of Alex Jones.

Well, China’s stock markets are closed for a week.
So they obviously didn’t want coronavirus affecting the valuations of their companies.
For as long as they could prevent it.

I was trying to summarize the conflicting positions.
The reality is that the CDC is as much a political bureaucracy as a medical organization. That fact must be taken into perspective when interpreting its actions.
There is nothing conspiratorial in saying that. It is simply a fact to consider.
I happened to see my doctor today and we discussed this. He is a sharp guy and definitely not prone to hyperbole.
He stated there was a 2 week window of asymptomatic transmission. He also said we have a world full of Chinese typhoid Marys out there. I’ve know him for years and I take his opinion over a press release by the political animals running the CDC.
He said to me “this is going to be a catastrophe”. He’s not wrong often, I hope he is this time.....but not betting the bank on it.
I hope the CDC is correct, but I remain skeptical until proven otherwise.

Because most of those 120 are POC and they don’t want to be accused of racism.
As of 7:45 PM ET, there are 4295 confirmed cases worldwide and 106 confirmed deaths.
That is an increase of 1,538 confirmed cases (56%. Increase) and 26 confirmed deaths (33% increase) in the last 24 hours.
Pretty sure those curves are approaching a vertical asymptote.
