Appeasement isn’t any part of Romney’s thinking. Like all Never Trumpers Romney believes that the public is only one short step away from repudiating Trump and coming back to the Traditional Republican Values, meaning him. Romney figures that witnesses to “whatever” might result in the collapse of Trump’s base, leaving the path clear for him to be the 2020 nominee. I believe that. I believe that Romney, a/k/a Pierre Delecto, is really (1) that out of touch and (2) so impressed with himself that he believes this is actually a reasonable plan.
