A sharp rise in citywide crime since 2020 began was sparked by New Yorks new bail reform laws, which took away a judges discretion to hold repeat and possibly violent offenders behind bars, NYPD Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said at a press conference Friday.
In the first three weeks of this year, were seeing significant spikes in crime. So either we forgot how to police New York City, or theres a correlation, Shea told reporters in reference to the new laws.
If you let out individuals that commit a lot of crime, thats precision policing in reverse and were seeing the effects in a very quick time, and that is why were so concerned.
The new law has stopped a slew of non-violent offenses from being bail eligible, allowing criminals to walk free after committing robberies, burglaries and other offenses.
Since 2020 began, as of Friday at midnight, robberies are up 32.5 percent, car theft is up 61 percent and burglaries are up 18 percent compared to the same time period last year.
And the numbers arent fractions either a total of 233 more robberies have happened this year compared to last, 159 more car thefts and 125 more burglaries, just in the last three weeks.
People say it just took effect you cant have consequences already. Take a look at the comp stat, Shea railed.
Were seeing it immediately at the same time that you have [state and local jail] populations dropping significantly, the new commissioner went on.
Now dont tell me theres not a correlation to that.
Shea went to Albany this week to talk to lawmakers about his concerns, which he said were two pronged.

DuhCommieo needs to reintroduce Stop-and-Frisk.
LOL!
Have fun, NYC.
Its a get out of jail free card. Also, police aren’t bothering to arrest because of it. That’s straight from a relative who is a State Trooper.
I predict the first death will come through a domestic situation where an offender is released.
This is the left destroying public safety in the name of “social justice”.
Well no schite.
That's absolutely insane.
I don't think crime numbers in New York have ever moved that much before, in either direction.
Doi, Duh, No sh&& Sherlock etc. Bunch of dumb asses. Good thing is Cuomo and Deblasio will be re-elected as often as they like!
And de Blasio says, “Nothing to see here. Move along”
Word on the street is that is now catch and release. Open season, basically.
Two comments:
1. Ya think? (SA Gibbs)
2. Stop and frisk. No. Unless the cop can articulate reasonable suspicion that a crime is/was/about to be committed, the mere presence of a firearm is not grounds for a search. Terry v OH.
Well, whodathunkit ? !
And here’s another amazing statistic.
Number of column inches New York’s paper of record (the New York Times) devotes to New York Police Commissioner’s press conference announcing the biggest crime spike in New York history:

>> robberies are up 32.5 percent, car theft is up 61 percent and burglaries are up 18 percent ...
And what qualifications, Commissioner Dermot (besides your willingness to kiss HizHonner’s ring), put you in that lofty position?
Pretty mild response, sir. Once again, it just goes to show that top cops are all too frequently politicians, not cops. I suspect real cops would be using their position as a bully pulpit.
I believe bail reform was the cause of a spike in crime 55 years ago.
Like nobody saw that coming.
The same thing is happening in San Francisco now that they have a new far Left liberal DA, Chesa Boudin.
The Left in this country are pro-criminal and anti-victim. Pro-illegals and anti-citizens. Pro-enemies and anti-America.
They will be the downfall of this country.
TN GOV BILL LEE RINO WANTS SAME, RED FLAG AND MORE REFUGES. 1 TERM AND OUT.
Didn’t Giuliani manage to make NYC livable?
No silly, everybody knows that was Bloomberg, haven't you seen his campaign ads?
