Here’s what we know – or think we know – about the new coronavirus: China has claimed that, in Wuhan, which is Ground Zero for the virus, 1,975 people have confirmed cases of coronavirus, with 324 in critical condition, and that 56 people have died. In addition, there are 2,684 suspected cases. The virus is a relative of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (or SARS), another coronavirus virus that hit in 2002. Experts are currently saying that the new virus is not as severe as the 2002 outbreak, although it may be more contagious. So far, that’s not too bad.
But here’s what we also know: China has quarantined more than 35 million people and stopped all travel in or out of Wuhan during the busy Chinese New Year season. China has also announced that it plans to build a 1,000-bed hospital within a week to treat coronavirus. Those stories either indicate that China is taking very seriously its responsibility to its people and to the world at large to stop an inconvenient and somewhat dangerous virus from spreading or it means that the Chinese government is scared and panicking.
One nurse in China says it’s the latter. The nurse, wearing heavy protective garb that hides her identity, has published a video claiming that 90,000 people have the coronavirus in Wuhan
I am here to tell the truth. At this moment, Hubei Province (including the Wuhan area), even China, 90,000 people have been infected by corona virus so far.
How much do you know about corona virus? If a person who is infected with coronavirus, if you can’t isolate someone who is infected with the virus, if you can’t make the right treatment to them,

Do surgical masks really work?
Officials address CDC confirmation of first case of coronavirus in Chicago area.
Amid the deadly outbreak of coronavirus in China thats killed at least 26 people and sickened hundreds of others, officials in the country are encouraging the public to wear surgical masks to prevent the spread of disease. Demands for the masks have skyrocketed, with many retailers unable to keep up.
But the question remains: Do surgical masks really work?
CHINA CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK SENDS COUNTRY SCRAMBLING TO BUILD HOSPITAL
Surgical masks will not prevent your acquiring diseases, said Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine and infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University, and the medical director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, to Fox News.
Rather, he explained, surgical masks are typically used by surgeons to protect their patients from their mouth-borne germs but those masks don’t work to prevent inhaling diseases, said Schaffner.
The masks, which cover the nose and mouth, are often made from a flimsy material and arent fitted to the face. In other words, spaces and gaps can form around the cheeks and edges of the mouth, making it easy for air to move in and out.
US AIRPORTS DISPLAYING CDC WARNING POSTERS AMID CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK
When coughing, you can feel the puffs of air coming out of the mask, he said.
That said, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently recommending anyone infected with the novel coronavirus or being tested for it to wear a surgical mask when in public. And one infectious disease physician told The New York Times the masks could block large respiratory droplets from entering your body when an infected person sneezes or coughs. These large droplets are largely behind the spread of coronaviruses, the physician said.
A more protective mask, known as an N-95 respirator, may be more effective, said Schaffner. But, he noted, a non-medical professional using this mask is likely not using it correctly, doing little to prevent the spread of illness or inhaling a disease.
The chance of the average person going into a pharmacy, wearing them correctly and for long periods of time is unlikely, he said.

Drink na na na nine Coronas and call me in the morning.
There's the R0...
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
I read something about it being contracted through airborne droplets getting into the eyes.
then go home take the mask off with your bare hands and throw it in the kitchen trash.... Not effective at all. Good handwashing and keeping your hands away from your face is the best practice.
About 100,000 acute/intensive care beds in the US so lets assume quintupling of capacity and get up to a half million beds.
Scary given the estimated R0 of 3.8 (3.8 new infected by each case) which is actually a hockey stick graph.
I wasn’t nervous about this until Trump tweeted about it.
What did he write
He basically said that he had faith that China would get things under control.
Remove goggles by strap from behind wearing the nitrile gloves you went out with and place the goggles to the elbow in (500mg/l free iodine) iodophor solution wearing gloves then place the canned groceries you brought home then remove mask from behind and throw that and all clothes you went out in in dryer on high for 20 minutes and discard gloves. Redip hands to the elbow and allow to air dry. Wash thoroughly after making a point not to touch face during this whole process and redip to the elbows and allow to air dry. Take a shower and scrub vigorously. Go remove the groceries and goggles from the iodophor and air dry.
The virus survives for days on hard surfaces
Ive read that the experts think the virus can live 2 - 3 hours in the open environment. Its an RNA virus and isnt alive in the classical sense. It needs a host cell where it can inject itself, then take over the cells replication machinery to make copies of itself. It is truly incredible how these things work.
Contaminated surface viability: Flu and cold Coronavirus.. about 1 day. MERS and SARS Coronavirus, up to 2 weeks. I am going to guess this is going to be more like MERS and SARS.
All of it is temp and humidity dependent so those are just guidelines.
