Sen. Mitt Romney said Saturday that it's "very likely" that he'll be in favor of calling witnesses in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, but won't decide until after opening arguments.
"I think it's very likely I'll be in favor of witnesses, but I haven't made a decision finally yet and I won't until the testimony is completed," the Utah Republican said, following the first day of the Trump team's opening arguments.
Asked if he thought the defense team was effective, Romney replied, "I just don't have any comments on the process or the evidence until the trial is over."
Romney, a conservative who has before expressed frustration with Trump, previously indicated that he would be interested in hearing testimony from former national security adviser John Bolton. He said earlier this month, "I would like to hear from John Bolton and other witnesses, but at the same time I'm comfortable with the Clinton impeachment model when we have opening arguments first and then we have a vote on whether to have witnesses."
Democrats need four Republicans to vote with them in favor of subpoenas for witnesses or new evidence in order to extend the trial and gather new information.
There are only maybe four, realistically, who would vote in favor of calling witnesses who could testify against the President. That short list includes Romney, relative moderates Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and endangered senators up for reelection like Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado.

Hind sight is 20/20.
We didn’t know a man like Trump existed outside of hopes and dreams.
It’s not just Romney and Bush, Trump has exposed them all.
Maybe he is in cahoots with PRyan on this.
UT never votes against “a bishop.”
Being a Mormon doesn't make you a conservative... It makes you a Mormon. Romney is possibly a centrist, but when he isn't a centrist he's a liberal and he and John McCain were the worst presidential candidates in Republican party history. Obama's presidency made Jimmy Carter the second worst president in history and neither of these RINO's could even come close to beating him.
> “I have no use for McCain, but the guy did fly planes off of a carrier and did get shot down and did endure some pretty brutal treatment.”
Actually he flunked flight school and was expelled but his Admiral father got him reinstated.
His plane downing in Vietnam was the result of flying too low against the clear orders of the flight plan. In other words, he screwed up.
He was given preferential treatment in POW camp. He wanted to confess and he did confress because he wanted to get out early but Admiral Stockdale who was in with him told all POWs “No one gets out of here unless we all get of out here together.”
Because his father and grandfather were US Navy Admirals, he was given favorable treatment as a POW.
His medal citations for heroism were suspicious as those citations are written according to a manual of instruction and require a clear and detailed description of exactly what the medal awardee did to receive medals of bravery and heroism. In McCain’s citations there was none of that. Other POWs had the citations written according to manual but not McCain’s. It’s almost as if someone was told to write a citation for heroism without knowing what heroic acts were involved.
Many Freepers including me did scions of research on McCain when he was badmouthing Trump everyday in the 2016 campaign. We uncovered incontrovertible facts about McCain that revealed what he really was. The only allegation against him that was fairly debunked was his culpability with the USS Forrestal fire. And still the jury is out on that, but there are so many other facts found on him showing him to be a fraud that it becomes clear as a bell why Candidate Trump said:
Hes not a war hero, said Trump. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who werent captured.
Donald Trump was exactly right. McCain had allowed the media to build him up as a war hero when he was not. There were real heroes that died in the jungles of Viet Nam who were never given so many medals of heroism that McCain was awarded.
McCain was a fraud.
But what really grates me is what he did to his first wife Carol McCain when he got back. What he did is hard to forgive. I don’t even want to bring it up here as it’s so enraging. If he had at least confessed to the Lord and promised to be a better man, it would have made many think of him more sympathetically but he never asked for forgiveness,
He was elected and reelected in AZ because AZ is a red state with Republicans far outnumbering Democrats. The only way McCain could be put out of office would be to be primaried and JD Hayworth nearly did that but McCain’s campaign got Democrats in AZ to crossover in the AZ GOP primary and vote for McCain against the Republican conservative Hayworth. And of course McCain, like Romney, would speak out of both sides of his mouth and fool conservative voters in the GOP primary. When he would win the GOP primary, it would then be a cakewalk for him to win the general because there would be no way for a Democrat to win.
I am not making excuses for McCain. I only noted that he did serve and didn’t exactly have a pleasant outcome.
Fair enough. God bless you and let’s all say a prayer for such a great President we have today and for all his family that have suffered so much.
At least Lee likes Trump again.
Screw Utah. Screw Mittens.
Good one
All of this BS started by #NeverTrumpers.
One day Mitt will cross the aisle and vote with the Repubs.
Unfortunately he’s not up until 2024.
I remember we used to complain about Orrin Hatch...sure wish he was still there now.
Graham isnt going to let the Biden boy testify because Graham was in the Ukraine sack with him.
Romney says “very likely I’ll do everything I can to assist in the removal of Trump so I don’t end up facing arrest, trial and execution for my many many crimes.”
No. Really. I heard him saying that to a gathering of dem reps while he was standing on front lawn last night.
“”I just don’t have any comments on the process or the evidence until the trial is over.””
except of course his comment about likely favoring witnesses, a move that would extend this charade indefinitely, give the dying lying leftist fake stream enemedia many more weeks and months to attack Trump’s impeachment, and do nothing but damage President Trump and the GOP ... way to go, Mittens, you piece of shit ...
“If he votes for yes, he can forget about ever ever running for president as a RINO.”
i suspect he’s given up on all such future aspirations, and his sole goal now is to give full rein to his sour grapes revenge on Trump simply for accomplishing something that Mittens failed miserably at ...
“It is my understanding that calling witnesses will delay the completion of this trial for months, if not years . . . due to legal complications.”
almost guaranteed ... which is why there won’t be any witnesses ...
isn’t that the picture where Mittens got only one scoop of ice cream while the President got two? </sarc>
“Well, it doesnt make much sense for Lindsey Graham to publicly state, as he did yesterday, that hes against calling Hunter Biden, and hes looking for four Votes to vote along with him”
you still haven’t posted a video showing Graham saying that “he’s looking for four votes to vote with him”
until you do, we can all assume you’re just lying, like you usually do here ...
