Today, the gay community is facing another crisis that we’re not talking about and that elected officials are once again ignoring. Scores of gay men are addicted to crystal methamphetamine. The drug, which can change the chemical composition of the brain in chronic users, is extremely addictive. And just like during the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 90s, resources are paltry, government support is virtually nonexistent and an aura of denial surrounds the crisis.
Gay men are more likely to try meth than straight men. One explanation for this could be that gay men struggle with acceptance in ways straight men don’t have to. Growing up gay, and being forced to keep that a secret for fear of family rejection or neighborhood bullying can create huge insecurities and issues with intimacy.
My best friend was rejected by his family for being gay and beaten in the streets of his hometown in Mexico. He had to flee to the United States for refuge. As he grew older, he became more and more desperate to belong to a community. He sought out men on gay apps, and ended up falling for a handsome young man who was addicted to meth. He fostered my friend’s addiction. The initial drug use was about acceptance and remaining relevant in an overly sexualized culture. Now, despite recent interventions by me and other people, my friend is overcome by the daily ritual of obtaining and using crystal meth. He’s a different person than the one I’ve known for over 25 years.
There are many stories like this. The truth is, using meth can create a twisted sense of camaraderie among users.
Hookup apps like Grindr make finding meth — as well as men to use it with — fast and easy.

When I was young a family friend (a medical professional) gave me some diet pills that were basically just meth...not for weight loss but for extra energy for some upcoming exams.
I took one and really, really enjoyed it.
I gave the sample packets back to them and made them promise never to offer me any again.
I was not going to travel that road, no matter how much I enjoyed it :-/
The author is completely glossing over the really hedonistic aspect of gay meth use, it’s for so-called “chemsex.” They have sex with multiple partners, sometimes binging for days on it. That’s what Ed Buck was doing to those black boys he ended up killing, injecting meth combined with some other drugs, GHB, etcetera. That’s what’s epidemic in the gay male world.
A friend gave her five year old daughter a birthday party last Sunday. My friend has a five month old girl who naturally requires feeding every few hours. Mom's husband works a late shift getting off at 11 PM and she serves him dinner when he gets home. So, between the baby and husband's schedules, my friend is keeping all sorts of crazy hours, often getting up at 3 AM and sleeping during the day when she can.
At the party, she told me she thought about going out to shovel the snow last week at 3 AM, but didn't want to be thought of as a meth-head!
I didn't know meth heads do all sorts of weird things in the wee hours. Now I've heard it twice in three days!
Drug use is a huge part of the gay lifestyle. I know because I worked in a department store a long time ago. Maybe there should be a NYT article about gay men are more likely to work in retail.

While not gay, my son is a recovering meth addict. By killing dopamine receptors, it renders someone an emotional zombie, though raging anger remains. It mimics bi-polar characteristics, very high highs and very low lows. While there is not physical withdrawal, the very worst depression hits about 4 months out from being clean. The brain can recover, but it takes quite a while.
Our son has been clean over a year now. To most people, he seems normal, but we can tell he is not back to 100%. We feel blessed because we were pretty sure we had lost him. God is good. He has about 8 former addict friends who are no longer among the living.
Will meth mouth be the next poofter civil rights disease the way AIDS was?
How much blame do they drug-using gays get in this matter?
Or we could insist that people suffer the consequences of their own decisions.
So mentally ill homosexuals addicted to perverse behavior are attracted to addictive drugs?

How crystal meth is “ingested” in the this so-called community is absolutely gross.
Homosexuals and their enablers stopped the closure of their “bath houses” in the 80’s and recently, allow them to spread HIV without punishment.
They do this to themselves knowing full well the consequences.
