Democrats shoot down talk of John Bolton, Hunter Biden witness swap
The Hill ^ | 01/22/2020 | Jordain Carney

Senate Democrats are dismissing chatter about attempts at an agreement that would guarantee former national security adviser John Bolton testifies in President Trump's impeachment trial in exchange for former Vice President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden also testifying.

The idea has been floated by conservatives, who argue there should be "witness reciprocity." But Democrats shot down such talk, saying Trump allies are demanding an irrelevant witness in exchange for one with firsthand knowledge of Trump's actions.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), asked about a potential swap, argued that "witnesses should have something to do with and direct knowledge of the charges against the president."

"You know, we don’t need to have witnesses that have nothing to do with this that are trying to distract Americans from the truth," Schumer said.

Pressed again if he would cut a deal on witnesses, Schumer added, “right now we haven’t heard them wanting any witnesses at all.”

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the lead impeachment manager, called the former vice president's son "irrelevant and immaterial."

"This isn't like some fantasy football trade. ... This isn't we'll offer you this, if you give us that," he told reporters.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), asked about a potential deal during an interview with MSNBC, indicated he would not support a Biden-for-Bolton swap, calling Hunter Biden a "total sideshow."

"Focusing on Hunter Biden just furthers the entire scheme ... Trump put forward," Van Hollen said.

The Washington Post, citing unnamed sources, said there was a discussion among some Democrats about supporting such a deal but senators quickly distanced themselves from the story.

Sen. Christopher Coons (D-Del.) said such a deal "would mean trading a relevant witness who should be testifying for a witness who has nothing to do with the charges against the president."

Lawyer rule #1. Never ask a question unless you know the answer.

I don’t think the DEMS know the answers.

The more they’re them, the more they suck.

There is no point to any witnesses, without so much as an actual crime alleged. Neither of the two counts does so. Inviting either Biden, both proven serial liars, can only harm the President, as they tell yet more lies to smear him.

Sorry -- I should have been clear ...

1. The PROSECUTION should not be allowed to call a single witness who has not testified already before a House committee involved in the impeachment proceedings.

2. The DEFENSE should be given a lot of latitude to call witnesses, since they haven't had the opportunity to cross-examine any of the House witnesses.

3. ICIG Atkinson is the most notable witness the defense would want to call, since: (A) he DID testify before Schiff's House committee, and (B) Schiff has refused to release the transcript of his testimony. That right there is a giant red flag for any defense attorney.

And your seed for the accusations heard something from a friend, who heard something from another friend and so on making him immaterial for his hearsay, which turned out to be incorrect.

Game Over...

Hmmm, I guess “the truth” isn’t that important when it comes to charges against the Bidens. Afterall, Trump is being impeached just for asking about the Biden corruption!

The question is worse than the crime I suppose.

Senator, that sounds like a great trade for the democrats. Get a witness to help your case, in exchange for a witness that can't help the Trump defense. Make the deal.

UpChuckie is an a$$. My position is whatever UpChuckie says is wrong, that, includes, unanimous decisions.

Bolton was fired for not taking the Bolshie position.

Why Bolshies hate Trump, a Democrat, so much is a mystery. But, I have answered my own question, Bolshies hate Democrats as much as Republicans. Bolshie policies don't work, and, Trump has proved it.

There's one simple reason not to allow the Democrats to call ANY witnesses in this case.

Adam Schiff has already demonstrated a clear pattern of eliciting and publicizing selective testimony from witnesses. If a witness testified before his committee but provided no evidence to support Schiff's allegations against President Trump (or even worse, provides EXCULPATORY testimony), that witness simply vanishes and is never heard from again. This is exactly what happened with the original "whistleblower" despite Schiff's previous statements that the whistleblower WOULD testify in public. It's also what happened with the close-door testimony of ICIG Michael Atkinson. This is why Atkinson should be Witness #1 for the defense.

F#%& Schiff, and f#%& his demands for witnesses and documents. His demands for this crap should be summarily dismissed until he turns over everything he already has.

The rules that were passed yesterday, require any witnesses to appear, be first deposed. Upon review of the deposition, there's a vote on whether or not to allow the witness to testify before the whole senate.

Without justice being served on those who committed treason, I would find it difficult to muster any trust in our government.

I am 100% in agreement with your post. 100%.

If I were McConnell, I would tell Schiff and Pelosi: “Crap in one hand, demand in the other, and let me know which one fills up first.”

Ok. The DEMS bring Bolton in and he torches them in the deposition. Now the senate votes to make it part of the record. The GOP has a majority and it’s brought forward. What’s your point?

Most of the public has no idea what a sleazebag Hunter Biden is.

The Dems are afraid once the public hears Biden’s sordid story, the public will say, “Wow, this guy should be investigated ... Oh, wait.”

This is rich — democrats taking over an determining which witness is “relevant.” I wonder if the Republicans will submit to their democrat masters.

The Senate will call whatever witnesses they wish. PERIOD.

Just to be fair, if the house wants witnesses, then let them choose from a Senate list of acceptable witnesses.
