Outbreak from new virus rises to 440 in China, with 9 dead

The number of cases of a new virus has risen to 440 in China and the death toll has risen to 9, Chinese health authorities said Wednesday.

Deputy Director of the National Health Commission Li Bin told reporters that the figures were current as of midnight Tuesday. All the deaths had been in Hubei province, home to Wuhan city where the first illnesses from coronavirus were reported in late December.

Li said that marked an increase of 149 confirmed cases. He said Japan and South Korea had confirmed one case each and Thailand three. The U.S. and Taiwan also confirmed one case each on Tuesday.

Concerned about a global outbreak similar to SARS, another coronavirus that spread from China to more than a dozen countries in 2002-2003, numerous nations have adopted screening measures for travelers from China, especially those arriving from Wuhan.

The worries have been heightened by the coming of the Lunar New Year holiday rush, when millions of Chinese travel at home and abroad.

Officials said it was too early to compare the new virus with SARS or MERS in terms of how lethal it might be. They attributed the spike in new cases to improvements in detection and monitoring.

“They attributed the spike in new cases to improvements in detection and monitoring. “

Yeah, right.

All unofficial non-Chinese estimates put the number at 10,000 and doubling every few days.

The close proximity of humans, pigs and chickens provide a perfect breeding ground for dangerous viri.

The Chinese really love pork and chicken...so do I.

But I don't keep pigs in the house or chickens in the yard.

That would make more sense for the Markets to do the sudden knee-jerk yesterday...but probably somewhere in between if the rebound means anything.

This reminds me of the early days of H1N1 influenza in 2009 and MERS-CoV in 2012.

In any new disease, the worst cases are reported first (how else would it be recognized as new?) In the Summer of 2009 we were fighting over what level of respiratory protection workers should use, by November 2009 almost every human on the planet had been infected and it was nit recognized until years later that H1N1 2009 was one of the mildest Influenza A infections in history.

One of the key measures of the threat level is doctors and nurses dying after contact. This was true of Ebola in 2014, it was true of SARS in 2002. So far, it does not appear that the Wuhan CoV has caused any significant number of casualties among HCWs.

Yes, someday there will be a highly transmissible and highly lethal respiratory virus. I suspect if the Wuhan event were “the Big One”, we would know already.

That is one of my main concerns as well.
Healthcare workers are most at risk for infection as they don't know which possibly
infectious disease to which they are being exposed until test results come back,
after the fact of exposure.

Also, as with the recent Washington State exposure, the point of infectious state
remains unknown at this time (whether communicable infection exists prior to physical symptoms).
