Flanked by an independent counsel whose name is already etched into impeachment history and a marquee constitutional scholar who has stood beside some of the most notorious defendants in a generation, most lawyers would run the risk of being overshadowed.
But Jay Sekulow, one of President Donald Trump's personal attorneys since his first few months in office, is just as accustomed to the spotlight. Having weathered the former special counsel's probe into Russian election interference, Sekulow has also proven himself adept at waging battles on behalf of the President -- even when working off less-than-ideal facts.
Sekulow will serve as a prime-time-tested counterweight to Pat Cipollone, the White House counsel expected to lead Trump's defense team, when the Senate trial begins in earnest on Tuesday. The team is rounded out with Ken Starr, the famed independent counsel who made the last impeachment case, against Bill Clinton, and Alan Dershowitz, who represented OJ Simpson and Jeffrey Epstein.
A litigator and media fixture for much of his career, Sekulow has successfully argued 12 cases before the Supreme Court. His turn as a top defender on the Senate floor starting this week, however, will be his highest-profile role on the biggest stage to date.
Sekulow, Cipollone and members of their team have spent more than a month shaping their arguments in preparation for the Senate trial -- and yet sources close to the legal team say the speaking order of the lawyers involved and precise content of their arguments remain fluid heading into the start of the trial.
A person familiar with the preparations said the legal team has built such flexibility into their defense because House Democrats have the opportunity to argue first, and Trump's lawyers expect to mold their presentation into a direct rebuttal of that case.

I just heard Sekulow’s rebuttal of Adam Schiff on the Senate floor on Rush Limbaugh’s program.
Objectively speaking — HE EVISCERATED *ALL* of Adam Schiff’s arguments. Any fair minded person could clearly see what a sham this impeachment is.
Sekulow’s group — ACLJ ( American Center for Law and Justice ) successfully convinced a Turkish Court, which sentenced Andrew Pastor to 3 years in prison, to release him for time served ( of course the threat of economic sanctions from Trump as a big factor as well ).
I don’t believe he is on the broadcasts anymore.
His son Jordon has taken over.
Proud of Jay, he did a good job.
Ive got him marked down as a great Patriot.
So the emotionally arrested adolescents over at CNN write a headline to conjure up images of Jay standing there with his schlong in his hand.
What a bunch of schmucks.
I’m sure I heard Jay on last week. I’m sure he’ll be back after impeachment is over.
God has been preparing this man since the foundation of the world for this moment in time when His will must prevail over the schemes of the seditionist enemy. In hoc signo vinces!
We donate “bigly” to ACLJ. They do great work.
LIES. LIES AND INNUENDO.
I love this man. He is going to be a huge asset to Trump’s team.
Mrs. Alaska still gives some to ACLJ but I switched to Tom Fitton at Judicial Watch.
I like them both but I can't contribute to every cause, even good ones.
I gotta save a few pennies for FR.
Dems-Fear the Sekulow!!! He’s their worst nightmare = legally well educated and experienced; street brawler of the best type; media photogenic and image savy; and out for their blood, balls, scalps and wigs, and to destroy them verbally before a lot of Americans. Take no prisoners, Jay. The time for showing any mercy to the treasonous Democrats has long since passed.
