A gun rights rally in Richmond, Virginia attracted thousands on Monday and one Western New Yorker stood out among the rest.
Brandon Lewis was a protester at the rally who is getting a lot of attention from national media outlets because of the gun he was carrying. In many photos Lewis is pictured carrying a Barrett M82A1 rifle, which is a semi-automatic rifle that is used by the U.S. military.
Lewis told 2 On Your Side that the rifle was meant to send a message.
"The citizens are the government and we are in control not the other way around," he said. "So it was definitely a visual message."
The Washington Post quoted Lewis saying something similar, "This sends a strong visual message. The government is not above us. They are us."
Lewis owns the gun shop and shooting range called "The Firing Pin" located in Bergen, NY which is in Genesee County.

I have had the pleasure of firing the Barrett - once. A gentleman at the local range occasionally brings his and if you buy the round ($10 at that time) he’ll let you fire it. Had a hefty kick to it, but not as bad as you might imagine. I of course missed the target at a mere 100 yds ‘cause I flinched into the shot expecting a bigger kick...

Definitely an assault weapon. The shooter gets assaulted from the recoil, observers from the blast concussion, the target from the shot, and the wallet from the cost of owning and the ammo. I don’t know the powder charge but there’s 435 grains/oz, 16oz’s/lb, approx $30/lb. don’t take long to rack up a bill. Not counting bullet and primer. How would you like to feed ma duece?
I had a DE 50 for a while. It hurt your teeth to shoot it.
I’d prefer a chain gun mounted on my pickup.
Recoil is about like a 3” 00 12 gauge round. You feel it but it’s not as brutal as people think. Rented a Barret a couple years ago

We’ve got an indoor range that’ll rent you a chance to shoot a 50 BMG rifle where I live. It was $10 a round last I heard. I was shooting with my wife there and some young people (4 or 5) came in and started shooting the range’s 50. We just folded up shop and left. Hard to shoot along side a 50 when it’s being fired.
