I love just about all Clint Eastwood movies, but Richard Jewell is in a class by itself. This one was personal. This one Clint Eastwood made for me. Only a handful of people in America know what its like to be Richard Jewell and unfortunately, Im one of them. Mr. Eastwood got it right. Two thumbs up!
I rarely ever go to the movies. Nearly seven years after my acquittal in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, I still have to be very cautious about where I go. A few years ago, a man took a shot at me and missed my head by inches. He will be in prison for another dozen years or so, but every time I see my name trend on Twitter, I am reminded there are people out there who would like to pick up where the assassin left off.
My gut reaction in watching Richard Jewell was sadness. The film reminded me just how much heartache an accusation this heinous puts a parent through. For those who dont know the story, Richard found a suspicious backpack in Centennial Park in Atlanta during the 1996 Olympics. He alerted authorities to the backpack and helped clear the area.
Two people were killed when the bomb inside the backpack went off, but many more would have been killed if Richard had not acted on his suspicions. For a brief period, people called him a hero, but then the media and the FBI turned on him and accused him without evidence of being an attention-seeking security guard. They call it trial by media, and it is beyond horrible.

Exactly. Just like now.
I saw Richard Jewell a couple of weeks ago, its a must see for all FReepers. This movie really brings to light what we are facing with a corrupt media partnered with corrupt government.
That’s far more likely. Talk about “how soon we forget.” Militant groups were right wingers and no better than Storm Troopers according to the left at the time.
And look now - Islamic training camps around the country and no one bats an eye! Only when one can’t be ignored does it make the news.
Typo
“They left” should be “The left”!
Excellent movie on every level. Story, production, acting. All first rate.
It was a rush to judgment by corrupt FBI and newspaper people who were simply ambitious to be heroes, and who regarded Jewell as stupid and unworthysort of how the Democrats view ordinary Americans. In reality, he was just an easy target, until he got a lawyer who believed in him.
FBI and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution didn't investigate the simple facts that would exonerate him before they ran with the story, and didn't care if using him to polish their own lustre would destroy him and his motheronce they decided it was him, they didn't want to back down because they would look like the ego-driven fools they were.
Because human(?) scum like Andrea Peyser of the NY Post wanted to show just how vicious and brutal her prose could be while she was trying to “make a difference.”

BTW, the NY Post and Peyser settled out of court with Jewell and that waste of human flesh Peyser, kept her job.
Well... it was on mine. And I can't think of any other reason they'd want to play Pin the Tail on the White Guy. Who were they protecting?
I think Post #20 had a more plausible explanation for the fallout. I had forgotten OK City (1995) and the demonization of militant groups after that...anyone owning a gun, going to a gun range, attending a meeting was vilified and accused of being a militant. Zimmerman fit their narrative.
Only a handful of people in America know what its like to be Richard Jewell
I disagree. In my experience a large number of people are falsely accused. Zimmerman did a violent act in self-defense. Richard Jewell never did a violent act. Absolutely nothing he did justified an investigation. Zimmerman’s actions needed explanation and justification, which was given. There is a big difference.
But there are numerous Richard Jewell cases. From the Ford Heights Four and Rolando Cruz to the totally innocent people falsely accused of child molestation as told by Amity Shlaes, goverment has falsely accused and prosecuted and persecuted many.
