Trump rips New York City sea wall: 'Costly, foolish' and 'environmentally unfriendly idea'

President Trump on Saturday ripped the "sea wall" that was proposed by the Army Corps of Engineers to protect New York City from damaging natural disasters such as Hurricane Sandy, calling the plan costly, foolish [and] environmentally unfriendly."

"A massive 200 Billion Dollar Sea Wall, built around New York to protect it from rare storms, is a costly, foolish & environmentally unfriendly idea that, when needed, probably won’t work anyway," the president tweeted.

"It will also look terrible. Sorry, you’ll just have to get your mops & buckets ready!" he added.

The proposal, which would create a six-mile long barrier of man-made islands with retractable gates, is expensive, but not $200 billion like Trump claims in his tweet. The Corps estimates that the barrier would cost $119 billion and 25 years to build.

While the barrier would protect New York from storm surges, it would fail to protect against flooding from high tides and storm runoff, according to The New York Times. The barrier could also trap sewage and toxins, which could prove harmful to the New York's surrounding ecosystem.

However, a final decision on the sea wall is still far off, as Congress would have to approve of the plan.

$200 B LOL. Probably closer to $1 T when and if finished.
Rather save NO and cities along the Mississippi.

Right, because every $119 billion government project comes in on time and under budget.

Even $200 billion is low.

Triple the initial figure.

There have been plans for a decade or so for a surge barrier from Sandy Hook NJ to Breezy Point LI The cost would have been about $10 bilion and could have been recouped with a toll road. The politicians ignored it, probably because it was too inexpensive.

Why spend money on a city that will be under water in 12 years?

Dems probably wanted to build it in order to explain why NY isn’t flooded due to global warming. When flooding fails to materialize they could point to the seawall and keep on pretending it’s going to flood everywhere else.

The best course of action here would be a 75 year environmental review of the project.

Like Pres. Ford, Pres. Trump should tell NYC to “Drop Dead”.

The only natural disaster New York City has to worry about is its continued destruction by liberal Democrats.

People need to pay substantially for insurance to cover the cost of potential risk and remuneration for living along the ocean. If residents paid the actual cost of risk maybe society would relocate from high risk California, Florida etc. and move to Appalachia etc.

Just what kind of ‘message’ does building a wall there send?
