Rep. Ilhan Omar is facing another GOP challenger in November’s election — and she’s also a Muslim refugee.
Dalia al-Aqidi, a former White House correspondent from Iraq, said she felt compelled to run against the Somali-born lawmaker, calling her a divisive figure who has neglected her Minneapolis district.
“She’s spreading hatred, and she is spreading racism throughout not only her district, not only her state, but throughout the whole country, and this is very important,” al-Aqidi, 51, told The Post on Thursday after announcing her GOP run.
“She’s hurting the moderate Muslims; Muslims like myself. She doesn’t represent me as a Muslim,” she continued.
One strength of her candidacy, al-Aqidi said, is that she couldn’t use her background as a Muslim woman refugee to the US as they share the same basic backstory.
Al-Aqidi and her family fled Iraq to escape Saddam Hussein’s regime when she was in her 20s and became US citizens in the early 1990s. Omar fled war-torn Somalia with her family at age 9.
The challenger established a prestigious career as a political reporter, working for Voice of America and then as a White House correspondent for Middle Eastern television networks where she traveled around the world, covering conflicts in her native Iraq and neighboring Lebanon.

I don’t know much at all about the muslim book, but there would have to be at least SOME redeemable passages to accept and throw away the rest to be able to be a “moderate” muslim.

This is really great news. And she’s very nice looking too. I admit Omar is nice looking too, but she’s a crook and possibly a terrorist.
Okay, I am massively cynical at this point and I have no evidence or knowledge thereof, but VOA? A correspondent for Middle East news outlets? Yeah, sounds to me like she could maybe be yet another CIA-cover candidate.
My doctor is a Muslim from Pakistan and never once has he threatened to kill me........And his family even puts up Christmas decorations.
“Moderate Muslim”...aka “apostate”. It’s like “Catholic Christian” where it’s all about appearances and doing what’s comfy cozy.
The only ‘moderate’ muslim is the one out of ammunition...

Who are these ‘Catholic Christians’ you are referring to? The way you compared them to moderate Muslims sounds as though you doubt there are Catholic Christians.
FYI - Catholics are Christians, and just like any other large group, they/we come in varying degrees of faithfulness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Some are saints and others are lukewarm, i.e. just like Protestant Christians - some are holy and others not so holy.
There are no redeemable passages, there are no moderates. Never forget.

No, I mostly agree with you. I’ve just never met one. To be ‘Christian’ means to be ‘Christ-like’ - but with sin and repentance. There’s also a call to witness for Christ. Statistically, I must be friends and acquaintances with over 200 catholics, but I’d never know it. They certainly NEVER share their relationship with Christ and, in fact, the few I do know would be eager to shoo away the Baptists and Jehovans (sp?) off their property.
Omar wins because there is a huge block of Somalis in her district. This contender is not Somali, therefore she will not win the block of Somalis.
Mixed feelings here, but Omar sure knows how to get America’s blood boiling.
